SOG Hunts Point

SOG Hunts Point Knives from SHOT Show!

Posted on January 24, 2013 by Brian

We only saw a few knife companies at SHOT Show this year, but you can be sure we took a look at SOG.  They’re one of my favorite knife brands, and that’s not a big surprise since they won this year’s Brilliance Award for Knife Brand of the Year!  That award was determined by you guys, so you clearly know your stuff.

But I don’t think SOG is going to rest on their laurels.  They launched some nice new knives at SHOT Show last week, including the Hunts Point Knives!  You can see them in action above, and without a doubt they have a fantastic look and feel.  There are a couple different models, some with a boning style blade and others with a skinning style blade.  On one set the handle is glass reinforced for strength and a good grip, and it comes with a leather sheath.  So you’ll get a fair amount from one of these knives.

There’s also another set that’s nearly identical, except there’s a rosewood handle.  I actually prefer the wood handle.  The look is classic and you still get the same fantastic blade.

If you’re looking for a quality hunting knife, it’d be a mistake to not check out SOG.  They’ve proven themselves time and again with their great designs and quality construction.

SHOT Show Day 2 Mega Post – Gerber, Vanguard, Trijicon, & EOTech!

Posted on January 17, 2013 by Alessandro

We saw so many brands on Day 2 of SHOT Show that my head is spinning!  This is the mega post with Gerber, Vanguard, Trijicon and EOTech, but I also have posts for 5.11 Tactical, Armasight and MFT/Fobus coming soon, so keep your eyes peeled!

Gerber Knives and Tools Cut to the Chase

Right as the doors opened at 8:30AM we were on our way to the Gerber booth. Gerber has been releasing new products at an extremely fast rate lately, ranging from classic knives and multi-tools to higher end survival gear. The first item we took a look at was the new Gerber Bullrush Multi-Tool, with G-10 lined handles. You can quickly access the knife blade, a Phillips screwdriver, strap cutter and full-head screwdriver right from the outside. If you are in the market for a multi-tool, it’s worth checking out – it’s got the standard tools you can expect in a multi-tool but doesn’t have the bulk and weight many others do. It will retail around $50 and be available in early February.

We also took a look at the new Gerber Impromptu Tactical Pen. Releasing around the same time (early February) and with a retail price around $55, this Tactical Pen has a nice, smooth feel to it and weighs about an ounce. Tactical Pens have definitely come into vogue in the past year, and it’s easy to understand why. Most people always keep a pen on them or close by, and the hardened tip can be used for both self-defense or breaking glass in emergency situations. The Gerber Impromptu Pen also features a “Rite-in-the-Rain” ballpoint ink cartridge which allows you to… well.. write in the rain!

Gerber Folding Knives at SHOT Show 2013

Gerber reveals new knives at an incredible speed!

We also learned of some new improvements and line extensions for the Gerber Swagger series. In 2013, look for new models sporting an improved locking mechanism, faster “draw” or open, black blade options, and a newly refined, more tactical look.

Gerber Tech Skin Pocket Knife

Worried about scratching your phone’s screen because your pocket knife has sharp edges? Check out the Gerber Tech Skin Pocket Knife. It won’t hurt your phone one bit!

After that, we got a little hands-on time with the Gerber Tech Skin Pocket Knife. This no-frills knife is special in that it is over-molded. When folded up, there are NO sharp edges, nor is there any exposed metal. That means you could throw it in your pocket without any fear of nicking or harming anything – no sheath or clip required. The handle is made of rubber, specifically to prevent it from scratching the screens of electronic devices you may keep in your pocket or bag, like your phone, tablet, or e-Reader. Very nice! The Tech Skin should be available in February or early March.

Vanguard Endeavor HD Spotting Scopes and Spirit Binoculars Look Sweet!

Vanguard Endeavor HD Spotting Scope

If you thought the Endeavor ED Spotting Scopes were awesome, wait until you take a look at the Endeavor HD!

The big news at the Vanguard booth was the new Endeavor HD Spotting Scopes. Featuring ED glass and available at the end of January, the Vanguard Endeavor HD will come in a 15-45x65mm version (angled or straight) and also a 20-60x82mm version (angled only.) Vanguard’s goal was not only to improve on the optical quality offered, but also to offer a more well-rounded spotting scope. The Endeavor HD Spotting Scope features impressive eye-relief even at the highest magnification power and should be a hit with the not just the target shooting community, but also with the digiscopers of the world.

Last year Vanguard released the Spirit XF Binoculars, a slightly lower-priced version of their Spirit ED binoculars. This year Vanguard is releasing the Endeavor XF Spotting Scope line – coming in a 20-60x80mm model (both straight and angled) and a 15-45x60mm model. Expected to arrive in May at a great price, we’ll learn more about them as we get closer to the release date.

Trijicon Always Impresses – Especially When Have a NEW ACOG!

Trijicon ACOG and RMR

For the fastest target acquisition at close and medium range, mount a Trijicon RMR on a Trijicon ACOG!

We also briefly stopped by the Trijicon booth. This year we learned that they will be releasing new models of both the ACOG (one of the most popular gun sights in the past few years) and the RMR (micro red-dot) featuring Nickel Boron plating. Not every model ACOG or RMR will receive models with the new Nickel Boron plating, but those that do will have feature a nice, polished finish and a more resistant surface to abrasions and harsh conditions.

In addition, Trijicon is releasing a new 3x30mm ACOG model with the 300 AAC Blackout Reticle. Designed for a 16″ barrel and bullet drop compensator for both supersonic and subsonic ammunition. If you know ACOGs, you know this product, and for those out there looking for the newest model this is the one to get in 2013. No mention if this model will also have a Nickel Boron version, but if we find out we’ll be sure to let you know!

Are you afraid of Zombies?  EOTech’s got your Back!

EOTech Z2

For the next generation of Zombie Stopping sights, check out the EOTech Z2!

EOTech is one of our favorite brands.  We’ve worked with them on some of our best OPMOD Products, and their holographic weapon sights never fail to impress us.  Last year they made a huge splash with their new Zombie Stopper Holosight, which they’ve updated this year to the Z2.  It’s got a nice bit of zombie blood on there (it might be green paint, but it’s for taking down zombies so it at least LOOKS like paint), and the cool biohazard reticle like the original!

We’re so excited about EOTech that we’re giving away their XPS-3 Transverse Red Dot Holosight!  This is one of the world’s most popular and effective red dots, valued at over $600, and we’re giving one away starting NOW!  Just head over to our Facebook page and click the SHOT Show 2013 Tab at the top of the page (or click here), and enter your email for your chance to win! Our giveaways for NightForce and Streamlight are still ongoing, so feel free to enter those as well, and check back tomorrow and Saturday for giveaways from Crimson Trace and Nikon!  Enter by Febuary 8th, 2013 so you don’t miss out!

Whew!  SHOT Show Day 2 was quite a day!

CRKT Knives

CRKT – Knife Collaborations and Original Creations

Posted on July 13, 2012 by Brian

Hey guys, Brian here.  I talked to George Poulos, one of the product specialists here at OpticsPlanet, about some of his favorite hunting knives by CRKT, and he agreed to write up a guest blog to give us all some more info on these incredibly cool knives.  Read on!

I’ve been associated with CRKT (Columbia River Knife & Tool) on and off for nearly 15 years, and these folks are one of the top knife companies in my book.  About 18 years ago, and completely new to the knife industry, the owners embarked on a venture that has set the standard for offering custom designed knives to the average customer at a fraction of the cost of a custom original.

Originally, with only two or three custom knifemakers in their stable, CRKT has built a reputation for fine quality, affordable custom-designed production knives. Possibly the most popular series is the Kit Carson designed M16 group of knives.

For nearly 15 years, there have been numerous variants available to suit a broad spectrum of cutting and carry applications. Today, the number of collaborative associates numbers 30 and growing, not to mention the knife models that are CRKT’s own designs!

An example of an original CRKT creation is the IGNITOR Series. It is a great size for everyday carry with a 3.38” blade, comfortable ergonomic handle design and my favorite of all handle materials – G10 – which resists slipping when wet and stays a moderate temperature even when exposed to extremes.

Among the newest CRKT collaborative efforts is the amazing ERASER from the bench of Liong Mah. This has become another one of my instant favorites! It’s formidable 3.875” modified tanto provides optimal piercing strength yet offers a long cutting edge.  The Mah ERASER ergonomics allow for low fatigue during prolonged usage and maximum comfort. Once again the use of G10 scales is a plus, not to mention the integrated blade flipper which makes opening lightning fast and reliable. They use state-of-the-art materials suited to the task at hand as well as the most popular handle materials. In addition, they are true innovators of some of the most sophisticated locks and safeties available to today’s knife buyer.

Although most of the knives are imported, CRKT goes to great lengths to insure quality control, and this keeps them affordable. The company has always been very attentive to maintaining a meticulous level of quality and insuring the safety and reliability of their locks, releases and safeties.  I‘ve always been impressed by their genuine concern with preserving the integrity of their brand and always stand behind their products.

In addition, these guys listen to their customers’ thoughts and ideas about how to improve a product.  What more can you ask of a knife manufacturer? So, if you want a quality knife for any application at a reasonable price, look at the offerings from Columbia River Knife & Tool. You’ll find that you’ll be able to afford several custom-designed production knives for less than the cost of one custom made blade!

Gerber LMF Infantry Knife for GearExpert

Cut to the Chase – These Videos will Help you Pick a Knife!

Posted on May 14, 2012 by Brian

We’re always getting in new knives, but it can be tough to figure out which is the best fit for your needs.  We have hundreds of different options, each with a different set of specifications that give you different performance for different needs.  There is a big difference between a simple pocket knife for everyday use and a big fixed blade knife for hunting.  So how do you pick a knife?  That’s a tough question, but we like to give you extra information to help you decide.  OpticsPlanet has a number of product specialists on hand who can answer your questions, and our How-To Guide Section is constantly growing and being refined to make sure the products and information is up-to-date.

Today, we’ve put together a couple new videos to give you a better idea of what some knives look like in action, rather than with a static photo.

The Gerber Mini Paraframe Folding Knife

The video at the top of the page is of the Gerber Mini Paraframe Folding Knife, which is a perfect little folding knife for carrying around all the time.  The blade is 2.2 inches long, so you’ll hardly notice it in your pocket, but the serrated edge will give you a fantastic cutting tool.  The blade is stainless steel so you don’t need to worry about it’s durability.  This is a simple knife.  Outside of the pocket clip there aren’t any real bells and whistles on the Gerber Mini Paraframe, but it is a solid knife for casual use.

Gerber LMF II Infantry Knife

If you’re looking for bigger and stronger in a knife, the Gerber LMF II Infantry Knife is a cool choice.  This is a fixed blade knife, and that blade is roughly a quarter inch short of 5 inches, so this knife is going to be too big for slipping into your pocket every day.  It is a smart choice for hunting and camping though, and there are some sweet accessories that come along with it.  I highly suggest checking out the video, especially toward the end, as George shows off the sheath, which has leg straps for a secure fit, and an included blade sharpener so you can put a quick edge on your knife.  It may not be for everyone, but the Gerber Infantry Knife is a tough tool for many situations.

SOG Seal Pup Elite Tactical Fixed Blade Knife

For another fixed blade option, but this time from the fine folks at SOG, check out the Seal Pup Elite Tactical Knife.  This knife is very similar to the Gerber Infantry Knife, though I have to admit I miss the sharpener.  The sheath with the SOG Seal Pup is tough and user-friendly, but it doesn’t have the sharpener.  It does connect very easily to various harnesses and belts, and you can mount it in the way you want.  It’s a nice general use field knife.

SOG Salute Folding Knife

Like the Gerber Mini Paraframe folding knife, the SOG Salute Folding Knife is a simple and straightforward knife.  Both are great for slipping in your pocket, though the SOG Salute has a little bit longer blade, and it has a really tough back lock, which keeps the blade nice and secure.  These details are huge, and take the blade to the next level, but I know in some places you aren’t allowed to carry a blade over 3 inches.  This is a fantastic knife though, and is a great addition to your EDC.

What do you think of these New Knives?

I’d love to hear which of these knives is your favorite.  Do you prefer a fixed blade or folding?  SOG or Gerber?  Sound off in the comments below!

Gear Expert gears up for Spring!

Spring Comes & With it Sports Training Gear from OpticsPlanet!

Posted on March 19, 2012 by Brian

Tomorrow is the first day of Spring, though with the wonderful weather we’ve had here in Chicago the past few weeks you’d think Spring came a long time ago!  As the first day of Spring, March 20 is the Vernal Equinox.  This means that the Earth is neither tilted toward or away from the Sun.  Unlike the winter solstice, which is (for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere) when the Earth is tilted its furthest away from the Sun, and the summer solstice, which is when the Earth is tilted most directly toward the sun, the Vernal (Spring) and Autumnal Equinoxes are the times when the Earth is perfectly in balance with the Sun.

Of course, with Spring comes new life, flowering plants and, of course, sports!  I wrote a few weeks back about Spring Training starting for Baseball, but that’s down in Arizona.  For those of us in cooler climes it’s usually not feasible to be outside practicing our golf swing or going for a bike ride until after the Vernal Equinox.

And sports are what I want to talk about today!  I love to get outside and have some fun in the sun.  I’ve been jogging since college, and I love to get out on the trails for a long run.  One thing that makes these runs more enjoyable is a GPS device.  I really like the Garmin Forerunner 110 Sports Training GPS Watch.  It keeps track of your time, distance and speed.  You can also connect the watch to your computer and look at a great deal of past data to track your performance.  I was out running yesterday with my GPS on and it was great to see how fast I was running, how far I went and my overall time.  About halfway through my run I started pushing myself harder just to see the speed go up!  That was a great workout!

But there are more ways to use a GPS than just jogging.  Obviously they’re great for navigation, but as you can see in the video above, they’re a fantastic tool for golf as well!  The Bushnell Yardage Pro XGC Plus Golf Rangefinder has over 16,000 golf courses programmed in, with additional courses added through their website.  Unlike laser rangefinders, which require line of sight with the pin, sand traps and other hazards you may wish to avoid, the Yardage Pro will give you accurate distances to on the course even if there’s a tree in the way!  It’s super simple to use, and it’s really compact so it’ll easily fit in your golf bag.

If you’re a big time golfing enthusiast, you’ll also really like the Wenger Swiss Army Knife Golf Pro.  This Swiss Army Knife has a few tools that were specifically designed to make a golfer’s life a little easier.  There’s a club face cleaner, which is very important to successful swings, a divot repair tool, which helps you be courteous on the links, a 2.5″ blade, a shoe spike wrench, key chain and more!  The Wenger Swiss Army Golf Pro will quickly become an essential part of your golf bag.

Action Camera for GearExpertAnother cool piece of gear that’s a lot of fun for Spring Sports is the Epic HD1080p Adventure Camera.  We actually have this cool camera around the office here at GearExpert by OpticsPlanet, and it is a lot of fun to use.  You can mount the camera on your helmet when riding a bike or rock climbing, but there are a ton of cool possibilities.  In the photo above you can see we mounted it on a pair of ear muffs, so if you want to use it while at the shooting range it’ll work nicely.  This is THE camera for the more adventurous amongst you this Spring!

We want you to keep safe during your Spring Sports Adventures, and we put a few great items in our Spring Sports Guide to give you a little extra security.  First, we have the Camelbak Stealth 72 Oz Hydration Pack.  Keeping well hydrated is essential to performing at your best and to staying safe when exerting yourself.

The other piece of safety/performance gear we have is the Bolle Vigilante Sunglasses with Interchangeable Lenses.  These protective shades are so amazing they’ve won our Brilliance Award for Best Sports Sunglasses for three years running!!! This is due to their incredibly flexible and strong frame, and the wide variety of lenses that let you customize the sunglasses performance for your activity.  Want to play golf?  You’ll want to use the Eaglevision lenses.  They help you distinguish the green for more accurate approach shots.  If you’re more of a tennis player you’ll prefer the Competivision lenses, which help you see the tennis ball.  This is incredibly useful for those with a hard time seeing, as most of the color spectrum is muted, except for yellow, which really pops out if you’re using the Competivision lenses.  You can wear these great protective sunglasses at night as well with the clear lenses.  This wonderful versatility is why we are so enthusiastic about the Bolle Vigilantes.

The last item in our Spring Sports Guide video is the RevFire Baseball Package.  Obviously, this one is very specifically intended for use by baseball enthusiasts.  While it gives accurate information on the speed of a pitch, this RevFire Package also tells pitchers the spin rate.  This helps up and coming pitchers focus on more than simply throwing the ball harder, as they can develop their breaking ball much better by focusing on the spin.  Coaches love it because they can see which pitcher is the most ‘in the zone’ during warmups to give them a better chance during the game!

We want you to get outside tomorrow and have some fun.  The summer is a great time to get in a little better shape and enjoy all the great opportunities under the sun!  Try out the great gear in our Spring Sports Guide Video and be sure to check out all the other great Sports and Hobby Gear from OpticsPlanet!
