Barska Contour Rifle Scope

The Barska Contour Rifle Scope from SHOT Show 2013!

Posted on January 29, 2013 by Brian

The Barska Contour Rifle Scope was a pretty nice looking new scope from SHOT Show.  It was specifically designed to work with .22 rifles.  I’m personally a huge fan of 22s.  Other than a few BB guns when I was little, the first gun I ever shot was a 22, and I’ve always had a place in my heart for them (especially with the price of ammo these days!).  The Contour is perfect for a day at the range.  The 3-9×42 Contour Riflescope (which is in stock as I write, by the way!), has three different bullet grain settings, locking turrets and a really nice overall build quality, which is really incredible considering the low price!  I think it’s best if you just take a look at this great new scope and considering slapping it on your favorite .22 rifle!  The Barska Contour Rifle Scope from SHOT Show amazed!

New MFT Firearm Accessories from SHOT Show 2013

MFT SHOT Show Gear – Hand Guards, Rail Mounts, Grips & More!

Posted on January 29, 2013 by Brian

I’ve been a big fan of MFT for a while.  The firearm accessories they make are always super high quality and have great features.  But my main reason for liking them is that their gear is no-nonsense.  As their name implies, it’s about the Mission FIRST and FOREMOST.  I like that.  I may not have a serious tactical mission, but when I’m at the range or out hunting I have goals, and I want gear that’s going to help me get to those goals.  Some of Mission First Tactical’s new gear from SHOT Show has me pretty excited about their upcoming product launches.

We spoke with Jerry from MFT, and he showed off a new Drop-In Quick Release Hand Guard that’s absolutely gorgeous and attaches very easily (and of course very quickly).  The rail mount goes all the way back to the receiver and should really give you a nice bit of extra rail space when equipped.

They also have a scorched dark Earth color for the MFT React Magwell Grip and a nice low-profile BMS Minimalist Stock.  I don’t want to keep telling you how great these all look since you can see them for yourself in the video above!  I wholeheartedly suggest watching our MFT SHOT Show Video and staying tuned to GearExpert for even more to come!

ATN ThOR wireless thermal imager

ATN ThOR Wi-Fi Thermal Weapon Sight Accessory!

Posted on January 25, 2013 by Brian

It’s no secret that the ATN ThOR has been a favorite around the GearExpert offices.  I’ve written about these thermal imagers a few times since they debuted last year, and they’ve always impressed.  There is an incredible balance of quality, image resolution and a huge feature set that really separates the ThOR from other Thermal Imagers.  With the already high level of performance I imagine ATN probably struggled a bit to figure out a way to actually improve the ThOR, but they have.

It’s a Wireless Future for Thermal!

I heard someone say recently that the world is becoming wireless.  They were wrong.  The world IS wireless.  Nowadays we have phones that can do just about anything, or tablets that add insane functionality to everyone from corporate CEOs to infantry soldiers around the world.  ATN knows this, and they’ve taken advantage of the opportunities this presents.  Namely, Wi Fi connectivity for their ThOR Thermal Imagers.

Imagine being able to get a target in your sights when training and having an instructor help you figure out where to aim.  They’d be able to see just where you’re aiming instead of counting on you to accurately describe it or spend some brass.  Before you even pull the trigger your instructor can tell you if you’ll miss and why.  Maybe you’re not compensating enough for bullet drop or wind.

And of course it doesn’t just apply to training.  In the field you’ll have extra support, and being able to connect through Wi Fi increases your memory, so you can record far greater amounts of data through a laptop or your phone.  If you need proper records, this is the way to get it!

The new ATN ThOR Wi-Fi Weapon Sights are really quite exciting, so be sure to check out our SHOT Show ATN Video above to learn more!

Vortex Razor HD Angled Spotting Scope

Vortex Razor HD Binoculars & Spotting Scopes from SHOT Show!

Posted on January 25, 2013 by Brian

Vortex knows that when you have a good thing going it’s best to not rock the boat too much.  Their Razor HD line is essentially the definition of a “Good Thing.”  But that doesn’t mean Vortex is going to be stagnant.  They’ve added some great new models to this already spectacular line of optics.

For instance, to complement the Razor HD Binoculars with 42mm objective lenses that were released last year Vortex just showed off new models with 50mm objective lenses.  They’re still very lightweight, and the clever body design hides the size fairly well.  The larger objective lenses gather more light, giving you a brighter, sharper image.  That’s a big deal and will really help during those twilight hours to spot game or if you’re a birder and want a super clear view of a long-sought-after bird.

But the Razor HD Line is also known for their Spotting Scopes.  Vortex listened to their fans on this one and debuted Razor HD 50mm and 65mm Spotting Scopes with both straight and angled models.  Like their other Razor HD Spotters, these new models give you fine focus and HD glass, so you’re going to get a great view!

I’m going to post a bunch of pictures of these new Vortex Razor HD Optics below, but be sure to watch the video above too so you can learn more about these fantastic new spotting scopes and binoculars!

Weaver Grand Slam New Scopes

Weaver Redesigned their Grand Slam Rifle Scopes for SHOT Show!

Posted on January 23, 2013 by Brian

We spoke with Tom from Weaver at SHOT Show, and he gave us a rundown of their newly redesigned Grand Slam Rifle Scopes.  To be sure, Weaver is one of those brands you hear about all the time for their constant improvements.  It’s actually surprising that they can find so much to improve upon considering how good their scopes are to begin with.

So what’s changed?  Well, quite a lot, actually.  The new Grand Slam Scopes have a lot of internal improvements but they’ve also improved the outside design to make them more sleek and sexy.  You can see this with the new Weaver Grand Slam Rings, which look great with these scopes, but also on a lot of other scopes.  They look great and they have a smooth feel so they won’t snag on anything.

But the internal changes are what’s going to give you the performance boost from these new Weaver Grand Slam Scopes.  The Micro-Trac System has been improved to maintain the quality level people expect from Weaver, while at the same time making them more repeatable and nearly indestructible.  As Tom says in the video, these scopes are nearly bombproof.  The tracking system was already pretty tough and had few areas where problems could occur, but those tiny little areas where problems could have occurred before have been strengthened.

You’ll still get great glass and a well-built scope, but the newly improved Micro-Trak System will give you incredibly precise elevation and windage adjustments while being insanely tough as well!  Take a look at the Weaver SHOT Show video above to learn more!

Colt USMC and PocketLite at SHOT Show 2013!

Posted on January 18, 2013 by Brian

As GearExpert by OpticsPlanet, I doubt it’s a surprise that we’ve spent a ton of time covering the latest firearm accessories at SHOT Show.  But just because we don’t sell firearms, that doesn’t mean we don’t want to see the latest models from our favorite manufacturers, such as Colt.  Check out the video above.  Trevor got to try out the new Colt USMC and Colt PocketLite.  They’re two very exciting new firearms, and as you can see in the video, they’re gorgeous guns too!  I’ll post a few pictures below too, but be sure to take an extra moment to look at, and consider the possibilities, of the rail on that USMC.  What would you attach to that?  A weapon light?  Laser Sight?  Personally, I’d go with the new Streamlight TLR-2 HL (which, it just so happens we’re giving away in our SHOT Show Giveaways over on Facebook.  Just go to Day Two and Enter your Email!).

SHOT Show Day 2 Recap Video!

Posted on January 17, 2013 by Brian

Hey everyone! I just wanted to do a quick post for our latest video recap, this time for Day 2 coverage! Trevor talked to a number of different brands on Day 2 of SHOT Show, including 5.11 Tactical, where he saw a fantastic new shooting bag that doubles as a shooting mat and more, ATN, where he checked out the new wifi adapter for ThOR Thermal Imagers, SOG, who showed off their new hunting knives, and MFT who had some great new camo patterns for their gear!  The video above is just a teaser of the longer, more in-depth videos to come.  Enjoy!

SHOT Show Day 2 Mega Post – Gerber, Vanguard, Trijicon, & EOTech!

Posted on January 17, 2013 by Alessandro

We saw so many brands on Day 2 of SHOT Show that my head is spinning!  This is the mega post with Gerber, Vanguard, Trijicon and EOTech, but I also have posts for 5.11 Tactical, Armasight and MFT/Fobus coming soon, so keep your eyes peeled!

Gerber Knives and Tools Cut to the Chase

Right as the doors opened at 8:30AM we were on our way to the Gerber booth. Gerber has been releasing new products at an extremely fast rate lately, ranging from classic knives and multi-tools to higher end survival gear. The first item we took a look at was the new Gerber Bullrush Multi-Tool, with G-10 lined handles. You can quickly access the knife blade, a Phillips screwdriver, strap cutter and full-head screwdriver right from the outside. If you are in the market for a multi-tool, it’s worth checking out – it’s got the standard tools you can expect in a multi-tool but doesn’t have the bulk and weight many others do. It will retail around $50 and be available in early February.

We also took a look at the new Gerber Impromptu Tactical Pen. Releasing around the same time (early February) and with a retail price around $55, this Tactical Pen has a nice, smooth feel to it and weighs about an ounce. Tactical Pens have definitely come into vogue in the past year, and it’s easy to understand why. Most people always keep a pen on them or close by, and the hardened tip can be used for both self-defense or breaking glass in emergency situations. The Gerber Impromptu Pen also features a “Rite-in-the-Rain” ballpoint ink cartridge which allows you to… well.. write in the rain!

Gerber Folding Knives at SHOT Show 2013

Gerber reveals new knives at an incredible speed!

We also learned of some new improvements and line extensions for the Gerber Swagger series. In 2013, look for new models sporting an improved locking mechanism, faster “draw” or open, black blade options, and a newly refined, more tactical look.

Gerber Tech Skin Pocket Knife

Worried about scratching your phone’s screen because your pocket knife has sharp edges? Check out the Gerber Tech Skin Pocket Knife. It won’t hurt your phone one bit!

After that, we got a little hands-on time with the Gerber Tech Skin Pocket Knife. This no-frills knife is special in that it is over-molded. When folded up, there are NO sharp edges, nor is there any exposed metal. That means you could throw it in your pocket without any fear of nicking or harming anything – no sheath or clip required. The handle is made of rubber, specifically to prevent it from scratching the screens of electronic devices you may keep in your pocket or bag, like your phone, tablet, or e-Reader. Very nice! The Tech Skin should be available in February or early March.

Vanguard Endeavor HD Spotting Scopes and Spirit Binoculars Look Sweet!

Vanguard Endeavor HD Spotting Scope

If you thought the Endeavor ED Spotting Scopes were awesome, wait until you take a look at the Endeavor HD!

The big news at the Vanguard booth was the new Endeavor HD Spotting Scopes. Featuring ED glass and available at the end of January, the Vanguard Endeavor HD will come in a 15-45x65mm version (angled or straight) and also a 20-60x82mm version (angled only.) Vanguard’s goal was not only to improve on the optical quality offered, but also to offer a more well-rounded spotting scope. The Endeavor HD Spotting Scope features impressive eye-relief even at the highest magnification power and should be a hit with the not just the target shooting community, but also with the digiscopers of the world.

Last year Vanguard released the Spirit XF Binoculars, a slightly lower-priced version of their Spirit ED binoculars. This year Vanguard is releasing the Endeavor XF Spotting Scope line – coming in a 20-60x80mm model (both straight and angled) and a 15-45x60mm model. Expected to arrive in May at a great price, we’ll learn more about them as we get closer to the release date.

Trijicon Always Impresses – Especially When Have a NEW ACOG!

Trijicon ACOG and RMR

For the fastest target acquisition at close and medium range, mount a Trijicon RMR on a Trijicon ACOG!

We also briefly stopped by the Trijicon booth. This year we learned that they will be releasing new models of both the ACOG (one of the most popular gun sights in the past few years) and the RMR (micro red-dot) featuring Nickel Boron plating. Not every model ACOG or RMR will receive models with the new Nickel Boron plating, but those that do will have feature a nice, polished finish and a more resistant surface to abrasions and harsh conditions.

In addition, Trijicon is releasing a new 3x30mm ACOG model with the 300 AAC Blackout Reticle. Designed for a 16″ barrel and bullet drop compensator for both supersonic and subsonic ammunition. If you know ACOGs, you know this product, and for those out there looking for the newest model this is the one to get in 2013. No mention if this model will also have a Nickel Boron version, but if we find out we’ll be sure to let you know!

Are you afraid of Zombies?  EOTech’s got your Back!

EOTech Z2

For the next generation of Zombie Stopping sights, check out the EOTech Z2!

EOTech is one of our favorite brands.  We’ve worked with them on some of our best OPMOD Products, and their holographic weapon sights never fail to impress us.  Last year they made a huge splash with their new Zombie Stopper Holosight, which they’ve updated this year to the Z2.  It’s got a nice bit of zombie blood on there (it might be green paint, but it’s for taking down zombies so it at least LOOKS like paint), and the cool biohazard reticle like the original!

We’re so excited about EOTech that we’re giving away their XPS-3 Transverse Red Dot Holosight!  This is one of the world’s most popular and effective red dots, valued at over $600, and we’re giving one away starting NOW!  Just head over to our Facebook page and click the SHOT Show 2013 Tab at the top of the page (or click here), and enter your email for your chance to win! Our giveaways for NightForce and Streamlight are still ongoing, so feel free to enter those as well, and check back tomorrow and Saturday for giveaways from Crimson Trace and Nikon!  Enter by Febuary 8th, 2013 so you don’t miss out!

Whew!  SHOT Show Day 2 was quite a day!

SHOT Show Day 1 Coverage – Streamlight, Nikon, Crimson Trace & NightForce

Posted on January 16, 2013 by Alessandro

Take a look at our video roundup of all our Day 1 Coverage of SHOT Show 2013!  We saw a TON of great gear from NightForce, Crimson Trace, Nikon and Streamlight!  Both Crimson Trace and Streamlight were big on the Green Lasers this year, and NightForce and Nikon pushed their tech ever further with their quality scopes.  We have more coming as we speak, so stay tuned, and in case you haven’t seen it yet, head over to the OpticsPlanet Facebook page to enter our giveaway!  We’re giving away new gear every day of SHOT Show (through Saturday actually), and our NightForce Giveaway is already running.  This scope is worth $2400, so it’s a heck of a prize.

Watch the video above, and be ready for more great stuff from SHOT Show 2013!

Nikon Prostaff SHOT Show 2013

Nikon ProStaff, Aculon & More from SHOT Show 2013!

Posted on January 16, 2013 by Brian

Last year, we got to take a look at the Nikon P223 and more, and our post on that great scope proved to be one of the most popular of the year!  With this in mind, you can imagine how excited we were to visit Nikon for SHOT Show 2013! They didn’t disappoint.  Nikon is making some major extensions to the popular ProStaff line.

The ProStaff line of rifle scopes have been an extremely popular choice with hunters for year now and 2013 will see the brand new ProStaff 5 line of rifle scopes. The line is expected to be available starting in March of 2013 with the following models:

3.5-14×50
4.5-18×40
3.5-14×40

I can’t wait to get more time with a ProStaff 5 rifle scope.  There are a ton of great features.  One thing that I’m really happy to see is that it’ll have the full support of Nikon’s Spot On Technology.  We actually took a trip out to Utah back in July for the Nikon Spot On Championship, and shortly thereafter I was able to do fuller write-up on the Spot On Tech.  It’s really cool stuff.  You can enter your ballistic info, scope and more into their website (or mobile app), print out a ballistic chart, and it’ll give you holdovers!  I explained it in more depth in that post, so check it out!

The other features in the ProStaff 5 line are pretty impressive as well, especially when you consider the quality Nikon brings to all of their optics.  You’ll have:

  • Spring-Loaded Zero-Reset Turrets – Very helpful for any shooter.
  • A Quick Focus Eyepiece
  • Fully Multi-Coated Optics – And Nikon knows their lens coatings
  • A choice of reticle – Nikoplex and an Illuminated BDC.  We’re not sure if every model will have every reticle style available from the start, but they should all be available soon!
  • Choice of Silver or Black Matte Finish

There’s no way the ProStaff 5 disappoints when it’s released this March.

The Nikon Aculon gives budget-minded hunters a great Binocular!

The Nikon Aculon gives budget-minded hunters a great Binocular!

We also got a chance to check out the Aculon 10×42 Binoculars, a new budget binocular from Nikon. With an MSRP of $99, it’s obvious Nikon looking to finally expand into the low priced binocular line that it has not really given much attention to in the past. A variety of magnification and lens sizes will be available (including the other most popular setup – an 8×42 variety.)

The Nikon Aculon 10×42 Binoculars feature a Bak4 Porro Prism, and are lightweight and ergonomical designed. The picture quality is impressive for the price, and while we unfortunately couldn’t test the brightness outdoors, it was quite good indoors. We’ll have to see how it holds up in future tests once we receive them in the office.

Nikon Prostaff 3 Spotting Scope

You can tell people were interested in the Nikon Prostaff 3 Spotting Scope. It already has a lot of fingerprints on it!

Nikon also introduced the ProStaff 3 16-48x60mm Spotting Scope (or FieldScope, as Nikon refers to them.) We’ll have a short video with more info early next week, but Nikon is aiming these primarily at hunters (not target shooters or outdoorsmen) and offering the product complete with a case and tripod with an MSRP of $329.

New Nikon Rangefinders at SHOT Show

With their fantastic SPOT On Technology, it’s no surprise Nikon wants to help you find your range.

In the rangefinder category, Nikon is introducing the ProStaff 7 6×21 Rangefinder and the new Archer’s Choice 6×21 Rangefinder. The Archer’s Choice line has been one of the top picks for bow-hunters due to the low 5 yard minimum distance and measurements in tenths of a yard. Both are aimed at the hunting community and will be great additions to the already popular lines.

Nikon P223 Rifle Scope

Nikon is expanding their mega-popular P223 Line of Rifle Scopes!

Finally, we did talk to Nikon about their popular P-223 line of rifle scopes. They are planning to make some updates to the line this year, and they are working extremely hard to try and keep up with the incredible demand they saw in 2012. We’ve heard from plenty of people how frustrating the wait has been, and Nikon fully understands. We all hope we can start seeing more of those scopes get out into customer’s hands as soon as possible.
