LOMO PLC - THE LARGEST OPTICAL MANUFACTURER IN RUSSIA

Since the beginning LOMO® has always been one of Europe's most advanced optical manufacturers. LOMO® has designed and manufactured optical devices ranging from microscopes and endoscopes to telescopes and night vision devices. LOMO® has built a wide variety of optical equipment from the most basic for hobby and recreational activities to very sophisticated multifunctional systems for science and industry including the largest optical reflector telescope in the world (a monolithic mirror with a 6 meters in diameter). In the former Soviet Union, LOMO® was the largest optical component manufacturer for military and space programs. Since the end of the Cold War LOMO® has been able to continue its tradition of quality and innovation by offering its diverse products and technologies to the scientific, medical, industrial and educational communities in North America. Nowadays the company produces over 200 different makes including general-purpose microscopes, observation devices (telescopes, sights, night vision devices), spectral instruments, measuring instruments (mining surveyor’s tape measures, radius meters, sighting tubes, objective lenses).

Production Secrets of LOMO®

Some production secrets of LOMO® known by all manufacturers of optics make it possible to fabricate high quality instruments.

The number of such secrets is but a few: the Baltic sand provides superb quality of optical glass, high skilled workers align each objective lens manually, for most important parts bronze is used as it was done in the 19th century, many surfaces after being machined by using high precision equipment are polished manually.

High Quality Products

LOMO PLC ensures the high quality of its products. LOMO PLC has received the Certificate which confirms that the company's quality system meets all the requirements of the international quality standard ISO 9001. The Certificate was delivered by representatives of the German company "TÜV-CERT" to top-managers of the Russian company. Presentation of the certificate is a natural outcome of a big work on the development and implementation of the quality system that was carried out at LOMO. The fact that the company possesses such a certificate allows LOMO to promote more strongly its products not only on the Russian but also on the world markets. The certificate of the firm "TÜV-SERT" which is valid in many countries of the world signifies the acknowledgement of the quality system that was developed and introduced at the Russian enterprise during the last years.
Considerable part of the products fabricated by the company is sold at the home market. Medical equipment and consumer goods are supplied to the states of CIS (mainly to Byelorussia and Kazakhstan). The fabrication of competitive makes made it possible for LOMO® to export civil products (microscopes, medical equipment, cameras, observation devices) abroad. 80 % of the total volume of export is delivered to Austria, Great Britain, Germany, Israel, Italy; 10% - to USA, 10% - to Asian countries.

LOMO stands for Leningradskoye Optiko Mechanichesckoye Obyedinenie (Lenigrad Optical & Mechanical Enterprise). For more than 85 years LOMO has designed and manufactured optical devices for various applications. Beginning with its foundation in 1914 LOMO was largest optical device manufacturer for Russian Army. Times have changed and now LOMO works not only for military and space programs, but also for science and industry, and for the consumer products market.

In the last three to five years, LOMO has developed new lines of products, including new families of biological, fluorescent, and polarizing microscopes, night vision devices, consumer Maksutov telescopes, etc. Now LOMO employs military technology for designing and manufacturing new generations of optical products.

LOMO is situated in the city of St. Petersburg – well-known Russian scientific and cultural center, the most westernized in Russia. The staff of LOMO consists of highly professional designers and workers with wide experience – 8,500 strong. The company downsized from 34,000 within the last ten years as a result of changes in production structure. All of these changes have given LOMO the advantage to be competitive with other high-end optical manufacturers worldwide.

History

The history of LOMO® started in 1914 when the PROGRESS factory located in the Soviet Russia began to fabricate microscopes with the aid of the ZEISS company, Jena, Germany. First microscopes were exact copies of the Zeiss microscopes, but by 1938 the PROGRESS factory developed models of its own.

In 1946 after the defeat of the third Reich practically all equipment and high skilled engineers from Zeiss were transferred to Russia. Since that time and to the beginning of the reconstruction all activity of LOMO® was placed on secret list as about 90% of the total volume of production was ordered by the Ministry of Defence and later – by Military Space forces. As a matter of fact all high precision military optics of the former Soviet Union was fabricated at the LOMO® factory. They were cannon sights, periscopes for submarines, objective lenses for spies in the sky. The personnel of LOMO® at that period was about 30 000 workers and engineers.

LOMO® has made the optical reflective telescope that is installed in the observatory in the Crimea (Ukraine). This is the biggest telescope in the world. The diameter of the mirror is 6 m – this size is still unsurpassed!
