binoculars for wide-set eyes

Postby mrhall55 on Wed Nov 09, 2005 11:12 am

I'm looking for a pair of binoculars in the $100-$150 price range. But I have wide-set eyes, and many of the cheaper models won't work. My IPD, my wife the optician says, is 69.5mm or so; she suggests something that tops out at 74 or 75 to give me some wiggle room.

So far, I'm considering the Audubon Intrepid 10x40 (57-74mm ipd). But I know some Oberwerks go that high. Are they any better? And Nikons -- would any of them work?

A lot of the manufacturers don't list IPDs in their specs on their web sites. And some of them call it other things, and one (I can't remember which) lists it in inches. Is it any wonder I'm confused?

Thanks.

Hi

You're right. IP is a spec often downplayed by many manufacturers, but it is a serious problem if you have an unusual IP measurement. Ar 69mm, though, you should be all right with most binos. For instance, the Pentax 8x40 PCF WPII, http://www.opticsplanet.com/noname.html lists an IP out to 72mm.
