You can definitely get an excellent birding binocular for that price and don't let anyone convince you otherwise.
Here are some binos that I would not feel slighted to use for an all day birding trip and I am about as hardcore as a birder can get. I've used all of these for birding and can recommend them, personally.
Swift Audubon 8.4x44 820HHS, http://www.opticsplanet.com/swift-8-5x4 ... ulars.html This is one of the nicest handling binos I've tested and it is still made in Japan. One of my favorites in this price range.
Might be a stretch on your budget, but these are definitely worth it for their color and superb brightness. Kowa 8x42 C3, http://www.opticsplanet.com/kowa-8x42-r ... proof.html
Eagle Optics Platinum ranger, http://www.opticsplanet.com/eagle-optic ... anger.html These are one of the great values in a birding bino.
