Compacts for general traveling and an Alaskan Cruise

From reading your forum I know that porro are better than roof for equal money. I really need the smaller thickness of the roof prism. Is it possable to get a good quality, rough service, 8X20 something, roof prism for $300 or less? Will they be as optically good as Nikon prostaff wp or similar porro prism 8X25?
Thanks in advance

Hi

As long as you get a phase-corrected (PC) roof prism, optics will be on a par with a porro like the Nikon. In that price range, you can get some good ones.

First, try the Kowa 8x25 (love the blue color option), http://www.opticsplanet.com/kowa-8x25-r ... ulars.html It does not have a double folding hinge, so it doesn't fold as compactly as high end roofs. It is, however, waterproof.

Definitely consider the Zeiss 8x20 Classic, http://www.opticsplanet.com/zeiss-8x20b ... pouch.html It's not waterproof, but optics are excellent and it just squeezes under your price limit. Really a very nice compact.
