Pentax 10X43 DCF ED VS. Leupold 10X43 Golden Ring HD

Postby ncoverlord on Tue Mar 24, 2009 9:15 am

I am trying to decide between these two binoculars and would like to know how they compare? Optically speaking, which is superior? I have used Leupold rifle scopes for years and have always been very pleased with them. I do like the fact that they are made in USA. I have read that the Leupold's are a bit heavy, however for my use that would not be a problem. I used to own a pair of Pentax 12X50 DCF SP binocs and thought they were very good as well. Thanks for your help.

Meant to say Leupold 10X42mm, not 43mm, sorry.

Hi

I would still give the DCF ED a slight edge in terms of optics, but if weight is not an issue and the US origin is important to you, by all means go with the Leupold. Don't care for the fit and feel of the Leupold in my hands, but you might find things quite different and, of course, can never go wrong with a Leupold in terms of customer service.

Thanks Joanie for your advice. Many people share your opinion about the look and feel of the Leupolds according to what I have read. I wonder if it's the brown armor coating that turns people off? I've not physically handled them yet, but plan to do so before buying of course.

I did want to get your opinion on one more thing. If comparing the non-ED Pentax, such as the 10X43 DCF SP, to the Leupold HD's, would that change your rating? Thanks again.

Hi

For me the texture was a bit slippery and with that kind of weight and with the overall shape made for an unsure grip. If you have big hands, though, might be less of an issue. Really owe to yourself to get one in your hands for a try.

I'd rate the SP as a great buy for the money, though perhaps not quite up to the HD in terms of resolution, at least on a test grid. Out in the field, you may not notice that much difference.
