Pentax DCF SP vs Minox HG

Postby confused on Wed Apr 08, 2009 11:59 am

I have been researching the high end of the mid-price spectrum binoculars (if that makes sense).... At $600-800 seems that under the big 3 or 4 (if we include the top line of Nikon) we have the Pentax and Minox lines, along with Vortex Razors, and Steiners, etc. Gonna be used for hunting and wildlife viewing
I was wondering and just optically speaking, leaving behind, design, weight which will all affect handling, which one was optically better. Just the glass. I know some people ave personal opinions about sacrificing clarity for increased FOV, or some CA, prefer neutral colors vs blue/yellowsih tints.
But as pure glass is referred (and I prefer to sacrifice some FOV for the est edge sharpness possible).
Which one would you rate at the top optically from the following list
Minox HG 10x43
Steiner Peregrine 10x
Vortex Razor and the Vipers 10x42
Pentax DCF SP 10x43
Thanks. I know a lot has been said about all these binos in the past... cant quite wrap my head around this price point
Thanks a lot!

Hi

Still have to narrow it down to which aspect of optics you want - color correction, contrast, resolution, edge sharpness, distortion and so on. No binocular I have ever tested at any price point has ever scored the best in every one of these categories. Further, they are all so close as to make variation form one box to the next a facotr.

Rather than be accused, though, of not having a favorite in terms of optics, I would vote for the HG, followed by the SP, but, then, the HG is 200 plus dollars more expensive. And I do reagrd other factors such as handling and mechanical construction to be important.

Jane thanks for the input. that was my feeling, price wise of course the lighter weight and better FOV (hopefully no CA and similar edge shaprness) of the Minox would justify the price increase, but if the optical quality was the same, I could live with SP's.
thanks!

Hi

You are very welcome. Tough to beat the SP for the money.
