altenative to Carson xm hd

Postby greg on Wed Apr 08, 2009 8:10 pm

I've been considering Carson xm hd binoculars. I'd like a magnification of 8, and they offer a 32x8 and a 42x8. I like the size and FOV of the 32x8 but would also like larger lenses for lower light viewing. Unfortunately, I really don't like the design and big size of Carson's 42x8 binos.

Could you recommend something in a 42x8 or 40x8 that would be similar in cost and performance to the Carson 42x8, but would have a more compact design and wider FOV?

Hi

Field of view on the Carson is very typical of an 8x and should not be an issue. I would not hold out for a wider field of view, especially since that usually costs you edge sharpness. Remember, a difference in FOV of 20-30 ft, one way or the other, is not really significant.

The Carson is taller at 7" than most 8x42s, but no wider or bulkier. Unless you've handled it, I would at least give it a try to see how it balances for you. Most 8x42s are shorter. For instance, you can get a shorter 8x42 in the Pentax 8x42 HRc (5.8") or the standard Nikon Monarch 8x42 (5.7") and, of course, there is always the option of the Monarch 8x36 if you want something smaller, still.

My favorite in terms of handling and feel at this price point is the Swift Audubon 828, but agian, handling is a personal issue. You amy or may not like it.
