Nikon 10 x 50mm: Action Extreme or Trailblazer?

Postby Tangent on Sat May 02, 2009 9:36 pm

I'm looking to purchase a pair of binoculars and have so far settled on the 10 x 50mm, and Nikons simply because I use Nikon Camera's & Lenses. I'm open to other brands,I just have no idea who makes good stuff and who makes junk. Right now I'm deciding between the 7245 Action Extreme and the 8221 Trailblazer. They have very different designs but without having held either one yet I don't know which would be better, though the trailblazer looks easier to hold. The 7245 seems to have an advantage in FOV of 341ft, vs the Trailblazer's 294, but the Trailblazer comes in at 1.91 pounds vs 2.25 and is also more compact being over an inch and a half narrower... The prices are close enough to be no help. Any suggestions?

Optical performance will be better on the Action Extreme, but handling and durability goes to a roof prism like the Trailbalzer. In order to make a roof to the same optical standards as a good porro like the AE, it will need to be phase-corrected. That would be the Monarch in a Nikon.
