Best 10x Binocs Under $1,000?

Postby Crusader on Thu Sep 10, 2009 8:01 pm

I am looking for a binocular for whitetail hunting, primarily from elevated stands looking over large fields. I want a 10x binocular and I have about $600 to spend. I can get the Minox HG for that price. So, the first question is, will there be anything I can get in that price range which will be better optically than the Minox HG? (I phrased the title of the topic to be under $1,000, because that is typically what the Minox HG goes for).

Second question, if I go with the Minox, please discuss the relative merits/advantages of the 10x43 version vs. the 10x52 version. Will the larger objectives of the 10x52 give me more light at the end of the day, which is when I need it most, to evaluate racks of bucks? I am a 50-year old male who is slightly farsighted, but I do not wear glasses.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi

yes, that is a great price. Go for it if you can get it.

At your age, all you will most likely be able to use in terms of an exit pupil will be about 5 (I know, that's about my max and I am also in my 50s), so both are approprite. The 10x52 will give you just a touch more brightness under really dark conditions and, as long as you are hunting from a stand, the extra weight and size are not much of an issue. However, I would not be afraid to recommend a good 10x43 the like the HG, either.

If I could chime in here, don't forget about glass like the Meopta, as it is outstanding and very tough. The new Zen Ray ED 2's offer a view on par with the Swaro SLC and very close to the EL, for a fraction ($400) of the cost. Vortex Razor's are very good also, as are Leupold Gold Rings.

Actually JG, I have the Zen ED2s, or I should say, sort of have them. When I got them (10x43), I took them out in the field and experienced the flare/halo/glare phenomenon that others have reported, so I sent them back. Right now I am awaiting a new set of the Zens from Charles to try. If they are no different, I will give up on them and get the Minox HGs, probably in 10x52.

Thanks for the input.

Joanie, just one more question on this topic. Regarding the Minox, as I said above, I like 10x binocs for the application I have. However, besides FOV, would there be any advantage to getting the 8.5x52 instead of the 10x52? I guess it comes down to exit pupil, and I don't know that my eyes would be able to utilize the larger EP that the 8.5 model would provide. Your thoughts?

Thanks.

Hi

Not enough difference in exit pupil to worry about, no. The 8.5x will get you a bit more FOV, yes, and it will also be a bit easier to steady. I seriously doubt you will see anyhting more with the 10x than an 8.5x. Really more of a personal choice on your part than a performance choice. I'd be happy with either one - I use both 8x and 10x binos all the time.
