Best 10x Binocular

Postby finhiker2 on Thu Sep 17, 2009 9:59 pm

What is the best 10X binocular that I could purchase (for sake of argument not considering the price) for use as my main hunting for trips in the western US, frequently in the mountains? I have heard some initial praise for the Nikon EDG's; but Swarvoski's, Leica, Steiner, and Zeiss are also mentioned similarly. Thank you.

Hi

There is never a single best at any price point, only a handful of best choices. I have owned top-end Leica, Swarovski, Zeiss, Steiner, Nikon and I have yet to test any binocular at any price point that scored at the top, across the board, in all optical and mechanical categories. Don't waste your time chasing the mythical "best". Not only is the binocular market far too competitive for such a thing, your choice of binocular is also highly subject to subjective factors, inlcuding fit and feel in your hands (not mine), brand loyalty, body design preference, materials preference and so on. Lastly, what specific features are most important to you? What specific optical factors? What specific mechanical categories? The ones that are most important to me are sometimes regarded as minor by other people.

That said, price is still a fairly good indicator of general quality and performance. I strongly suggest you take the time to get these in your hands and make the decision as to what is "best" for you at that time.
