Looking for a medium priced 10 x 50 roof binoculars both for daytime and night use. Looking at the Eagle Optics Ranger and the Leupold Olympic binoculars. Are they the same binocular? Also are their other roof 10 x 50 binoculars in that price range which you would recommend
Thanks

Re: 10 x 50 roof
Hi
They are similar, yes, but not the same. Either is a good choice in that price range if you are looking for a 10x50 roof. In my tests, the Ranger focused a bit smoother and was slightly sharper at the edge, but the Olympic was no slouch. I would be comfortable recommending either. Both excellent companies.

Thanks for the response, I notice you had a Alpen Apex also on sale in the 10 x 50 roof binoculars. How does that compare with the Leupold and the Eagle Optics?

Hi
I'd rate it very well. The Apex tested very well for me, right there with the Ranger.

Re: 10 x 50 roof
Wow, it's amazing this came up this week, because I'm wondering about another pair of binoculars for the same mix of applications...
I know this is moving up a bit in aperture (and price), but how do these binoculars stack up compared to the Nikon Monarch 10x56? Also, I am wondering about the weight of the Monarch, which isn't listed on the website as far as I can see. I am looking for a pair that I can use both for stargazing and birding walks, and I want to make sure that the Monarchs won't be prohibitively heavy for the walks (the Eagle and Alpen models seem to be acceptably light).

Hi
The 56 Monarch will be pushing 40 oz. That takes it out of the "hang it around my neck for any length of time" category for me and for most people. For birding, I like to keep weight to 30 or less.

Not sure what price range you guys are in looking for 10x50s and I am also not sure if this is bad protocol/unacceptable mentioning another vendor here, but I recently took receipt of the Minox 10.52 HG model and they are AWESOME! Fabulous optics, good weight and balance, just a super binoc. Can't wait for deer season to come when I'll be using them in the field.

Hi
All we ask is that you not link to the competiton's website, but you are certainly welcome to make product recommendations.

Haha, I ended up buying the exact same binoculars. They are incredible for both stargazing and birding; light enough around the neck, but as bright as I could hope for, and with incredible optical and mechanical performance. Sounds like the manufacturer was closing out their inventory, so they became available from some vendors for stupidly cheap...I'm a pretty loyal OpticsPlanet customer but couldn't resist a Minox HG 10x52 for $600. Looks like they finished closing out the inventory. It's too bad; I wish Minox would have continued to compete in the upper-three-figure price range. I've run into a good number of people who are committed to good binoculars but can't afford the prices of Swaro and the rest.

Hi
Sorry to say, the weak American dollar is going to make things much worse, in terms of prices, for any Euro bino. Buy it, now, if you are thinking of any Euro brand, including Minox.
