effect of temperature on binoculars

Postby nsteika on Tue Feb 02, 2010 10:44 am

I'm considering keeping a set of binoculars in my vehicle for convenience. I'm worried however that changes in temperature may have a detrimental effect. It gets very cold here. And some days may start off cold, but as it warms, and the sun beating on the car it may get very warm.
Will extreme temps, or quick changes in temp damage the binoculars in any way? Maybe effecting collimation or something?
I specifically have a brunton compact 8x25 in question.
thanks for your expertise.

There are no detrimental effects on binoculars in temperature extremes unless the changes happen quickly, causing external fogging. Wipe it off. Rubber eyecups can become brittle after long term storage in a car, especially if hot and dry. Keep the glasses in a case. I have kept binoculars in all my cars for many years.
