oberwerk 20-90 waterproof?

Postby peh on Sat Feb 06, 2010 8:15 pm

Hello,

I'm planning on buying a pair of binoculars and I like the Oberwerk 20-90 model. Is this binocular water proof?

Thanks for any information,

Oberwerk's website seems to mention "waterproof" on just a few of their binoculars, so I would take this to mean that not all of them are. Their website does not say anything about this issue for their 20x90's, so I think it's safe to assume that they are not waterproof.

Correct, as Phil says. When a binocular is waterproof, it almost universally listed as such in the product description, as this is an important binocular feature.

Hello and thanks both of you for the replies. I live in a subtropical area and lens fogging is always a problem. I have a pair of Celestron 15 by 70's that started out great but one night of extended viewing left me with a pair of badly fogged lenses, and the moisture will not leave as it condenses into moisture dropplets leaving the binos usless. I'm going to spend an extra $100 or so and go with a pair of waterproof. Oberwerks high end models have that feature.Without getting into five digit fiqures there are many good giant models out there that are waterproof. I won't make that mistake again by not buying waterproof binos.I would say that a model that is waterproof is a major feature and should be considered when buying astronomical binos.

Hello JneK,

As you guessed I'm preparing to buy a good set of astro-binos and being water proof is critical. I have selected the Oberwerk 25 by 100 as they are great quality and have superior coatings and have a 18mm eye relief. I see the Celestron 25 by 100 are $50 less and state waterproof but they seem to have inferior coatings and only 15mm eye relief and not being fully broadband multi-coated, but I detect that the Oberwerks are water proof as the description states nitrogen is sealed in with it's tight design. It is so critical I have a waterproof sealed pair as I live in Hawaii and an hour out under the stars will leave you damp with our heavy dews and me going to the top of Mauna Kea is not an option so could you please verify that the Oberwerk 25 by 100's are waterproof. Thanks for your time and sorry to be a bother but if I end up with another leaky pair of binos I will be very unhappy.

Regards and thanks,

Hi

Yes, Oberwerk describes the 25x100 IF as waterproof, right on their website. However, if you are in a seriously wet climate, you might want to consider the warranty on these two, since you have some risk as to leaking, down the road. The Oberwerk has a one year warranty, the Celestron has a lifetime warranty.

Hello Jnw K,

Thank you for your time and trouble and I will keep in mind the Celestron lifetime warranty. This is a reflection of their quality in my opinion and I do live in a high humidity climate so even an instrument listed as waterproof sure could leak. The 15 by 70 Celestron binos are only water resistant but the 25 by 100 are waterproof and being warranted for life makes this a safe purchase.

Much Thanks!,
