Pentax vs. The Euros

Postby booboy on Sun Feb 21, 2010 7:34 pm

I am going hunting out west this fall, and need some 10x power glass. My current binocs are old but good - Swaro 8x30 slc, and Zeiss[/link] Victory 8x40 T*P. I usually go for the best glass in riflescopes and binocs, but the euros have gotten expensive! (For example, all my riflescopes were Swaro and Zeiss, but I recently bought a Nikon Monarch and was shocked at how good it was!) I've read great things about the Pentax DCF; what am i giving up versus the Zeiss/Swaro EDs? The price gap is huge, and I was wondering if there is a gap in quality as well.

DCF's range in price from about $149 up to almost a grand. I don't think it's reasonable to compare a low-end DCF to the Euro alphas, even if they do provide a lot of performance for the dollar.

I do think however that you can compare the ED DCF's, and although they aren't quite a nice as a set of alphas that are 50%-100% more expensive, I don't think you are "giving up" a measure of performance that will make any kind of difference in actual use.

You do however give up the ability to show others that you can spend a bunch of money on binoculars.

I agree. In my tests, the Pentax DCF ED compared right up there with any Euro binocular in terms of optical performance. Definitely in the same class. Fit and finish and mechanical construction may not quite compare to a Leica Ultravid HD, but is still more than adequate for any hard use.
