What is best binocular for Fire Lookout, under $1000?

Postby CalatristeMichael on Fri Jul 30, 2010 7:29 pm

Right now, I use a Barska Cross Country 8 x 42 as a Forest Service Lookout, in Idaho...I get good service from them, but some eyestrain by the end of a long shift. I tried Leopold HD Goldline 8 x 42's and really liked them...any other recommendations? I'm making a list, checking it twice.

The Leupold is certainly a good choice. My top choice in that general neighborhood, though,is the Pentax 10x43 DCF ED Best optics I have seen at that price.

Furthermore, regarding fire detection... I will check out the recommended Pentax glasses. If you could give me a few other models to try out, great. Preferrably, closer to $600 than $1000.

I need good color separation... the differences between dust and smoke, objects and shadow, changing light conditions. Weight is not a factor. I have a tripod, providing a stable platform. I just looked at a Nikon Monarch in 10 x 56 that was pretty good. It's price was good too.

I will likely settle on a model binoculars less than $600.

Thanks again,

I would look for a good roof prism. Porros give good 3 D view, but my experience is also more eye strain.

Try Vortex models. 8x42 on sale

Hi

I know from experience with customers that the government does not offer much help when it comes to allowing an employee a budget for binoculars. I've helped too many military folks, game wardens, detectives who were given very skimpy and unrealistic budgets for binoculars. Sad, but true.
