Postby kenworth on Wed Nov 17, 2010 8:15 pm

looking at the leupold northstar 10.5x45 and the nikon monarch atb 12x56. which of these would be better for my use. i will use them for deer, elk, and audad hunts. really looking for something the will be real clear and dawn and dusk under low light conditions. i am also still open for any other suggestions. but 500 is about the top of my price range. any help would be appreciated. thank you

Either is a good choice, in terms of low light performance, but my only real concern in a hunting bino is the weight you get when you move over 50 mm for objective size. When that bino gets left in camp because it was just too darn big and heavy to carry, you bought an expensive paper weight. Furthermore, it has been my experience that a quality 42mm class objective will do all you need to do in low light and will be light enough to always be there when you need it. Personally, I like the smaller 45 mm objective of the North Fork on this matchup with 27 oz being a decent amount of weight in a hunting glass. The 41 plus oz on the Monarch makes it unsuitable as a carry glass. I'd consider it only if you paln to spot from a vehicle or a blind.

I will be primarly using them from a blind, tree stand or lying in brush for hours. Like i said my main concern is the brightest clearest view. escpiacialy at very low light conditions. appreciate your input.

How about an image stabilized model. Canon, Nikon etc. No tripod needed, less junk to keep track of.

In terms of exit pupil, they will be about the same in terms of image brightness, but the 12x will get you a bit more detail if you are trying to judge a rack, IF you can supply enough steadiness to use 12x, effectively. Like ET says, you might want to consider an IS bino.
