Lens Covers for Canon IS Binoculars

Postby zcanter on Wed Dec 29, 2010 3:02 pm

This question is for Bob at Optics Planet or anyone who has tried this product for an 18x50 Canon is binocular: I want rainguards/dust covers for the 50mm objective lenses. Best I can do (besides camera covers which are a pain to use) may be the Butler Creek Flip Open Scope Covers (Opticplanets Product Code BX-RA-COVERS-30030,UPC 051525300304, SKU 30030) at $7.94 per plus $2.05 per (from the drop down table) for size 44. My crude measurements for the outside diameter is either 59 or 60 mm for the 50mm objective lens (i.e. either 2.32 or 2.36 inches). Besides diameter fit, there is another question that needs to be answered: whether the area for "bite" on the lens is sufficient for the scope cover to take hold and stay. Has anybody tried these on the binoculars themselves?

No, I haven't actually tried that combo for a fit, but my experience with the scope covers, from working in a gun store at the optics counter, is that you will need to do exactly that. You will need to have covers and bino, in hand, to determine, 100%, if you are going to get a useable fit. Even when getting the correct cover as far as measurements, there is enough variation in the product to make one set fit and the next not fit, even when both have the same number. It is that touchy. I strongly recommend, if at all possible, to head to a local gun store that carries these covers, binos in hand and start experimenting, rather than attempting to do this mail order.
