Help a newbie find the best pair of Binoculars :)

Postby pragmatist on Tue Jan 18, 2011 11:52 am

Hi
I would love some advise on Binocs. I would use them for Broadway shows (I like seeing the actors expressions from the cheap seats)
Ballgames (looking for faces in the crowd, player faces, jersey numbers), and the occasional Hawk that appears over Central Park :).
And they MUST be pocketable.

Ive seen great recommendations for Zeiss Victory and Leica Trinovoids, but i cannot afford these.
I have also seen websites recommend Nikon Travelites (IV,V or VI).

I must admit i tried the Canon10x30 Image Stabilized binos and liked them! Tested against Swaravskis that cost over a 1000
and others; it was the only one that allowed me to read the house numbers down the block. But they are simply too big.

My current cheapo Binos cause me to see double images no matter what i do.

I could spend 100 - 250$ figuring while i wont use it more than 10 times a year, i would have it for life.

One friend said to get a Zeiss Monocular which is around $250 thinking that half of great is better than full mediocre.

THANKS!!

Hi

Stay with binoculars - much easier to steady and follow the action than monoculars.

By all means, for that work an 8x25 Travelite would do just fine. Won't get better optics for the dollar and still pocketable with reasonable size pockets.

Consider the Vortex Fury 6.5x32 binocular. They have been enthusiastically reviewed online at various websites. Currently they are selling for less than $160. They come with a lifetime unconditional warranty too.

Thanks for the replies.
I fear the Vortex just wont give me the magnification i crave. If they made a
pocketable image stabilized binocular..i would love that.

I hope to get to a store to to see a Travelite and, as recommended on line, an Olympus Tracker 10x25.

I am also impressed by how many people are writing..that if you can scrounge together $425, the Trinovids 8x or 10x by 20
are a no brainer...

tough decisions.

Hi

You are very welcome. I would advise 8x, rather than 10x if this is your first compact binocular. An 8x is easier to use and should be more than enough. I use 8x binoculars for theatre and opera and they are more than enough.

Yes, any Leica is a no brainer. Have both a Trinovid and an Ultravid compact. On the other hand, if you can spend that much money, the Nikon Premier LX 8x20 is right there with the Leicas for general optics and a bit nicer price. I also own one of these.
