Best Binoculars for Horse Racing

Postby Darren on Mon Jan 24, 2011 9:30 pm

I would like to get my father a birthday gift of a very nice pair of binoculars primarily for use at the horse races. My price range would be $100 up to $400 if there was a noticeable quality jump that he would appreciate. Would zoom be something to consider given his primary use? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

First, stay away from zooms - they are always inferior in both optics and reliability. Go with either an 8x32 or an 8x42 roof prism for a binocular that would be good for any application, including the races. Yes, quality is very much a function of price. A $400 binocular is a big jump in quality over a $100 binocular, though not necessarily a 4x jump. A popular standard at the $300 price point is the Nikon Monarch 8x42 and it is as good a place to start as any when it comes to a great value. For something a bit on the smaller side, try an 8x32, such as the Eagle Optics Ranger 8x32 SRT.
