minox bd bp 10x44 vs pentax ED 10x50

Postby dirk on Sat Jun 18, 2011 8:53 am

Hi,these days I always make comparasion of the minox bd bp 10x44 porro with pentax dcf ed 10x50 roof binos, disapointly I find the 200$' minox are sharper then 800$' pentax, although the pentax are more bright.Does anyone get the same colusion? IF only the roof binos of big 3(zeiss,swarovski and leica) can up to the minox according to the sharpness?
Thanks.
Sorry for the poor english.

Hi

Not surprising at all, since porro prisms are inherently more efficient in terms of optics - better light transmission and no need for phase-coating - and therefore cheaper to make to high optical standards. The big three have gotten out of porro prisms primarily because of poor sales. People want roof prisms and their advantages, these days, but I still love a good porro prism.

If I am not mistaken, I find on the pentax ED 10x50 that the sharpness is not the highest in the center of vision, but at which away off the center at about half to the edge.I dont know why, maybe this is coursed by the ASPH lens.
Of course,on the whole, the ED are a pair of excellent bino, very bright and clear, significantly better than minox bp.

HI

It is more likely sample variation than anything inherent in aspheric design. You might want to try against another one in a store sometime.

I'm afread I cant get a chance to try another pair,I live out US and there is not any retailer here.
I find on the ED the rubber cloth are not tight close to the metal tube, worse then the old SP version.
Opticaly, the ED are better then SP.

Hi

I agree, though I'd rank both as excellent in terms of optics in their respective price ranges. Enjoy your ED
