Help! Bushnell 10x42 Legend Ultra -v- Nikon Monarch 3 10x42

I need some help trying to figure out which binoculars to go with!

I know they are both good values for the price range but being on a very tight budget I want to go with the best I can get for what I need it for. I will be using them for mainly nature watching specifically to view animals such as deer, coyotes, bobcats, fox, ect. in possibly low light/low visability conditions. I do not have the steadiest of hands so that is also a possible concern as well as fairly light weight due to extensive hiking.

The Bushnell 10x42 Legend Ultra and the Nikon Monarch 3 10x42 are the two I have narrowed it down to, however if there is any better options in the same price range I would be interested in hearing about them too.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Hi

Both great choices for the dollar, but for me and my hands, the Monarch 3 is more comfortable, it focuses a bit smoother and just seems a bit easier to use. of course, everyone is different in this respect, but my choice is the Monarch III.

Thank you very much for your quick reply!

I was also wondering if you think the 8x42 versions would be better than the 10x42 for my purpose. What are the main differences as far as focusing, light transmittion, ect. between the 8x versus the 10x? Some animals may be closer than others and I would like the most flexibility in distance as well and easy to adjust and focus since I don't have the steadiest of hands and I really need something that performs well in low light. I know I'm asking for a lot for a low price, but I can only buy one and I need it fit all my needs.

Glad to help

There is really very little difference out in the field between an 8x and a 10x as far as how much detail you can see. If you can't see it with 8x going to 10x won't solve the problem. That's time to break out the spotting scope. In other words, your choice between an 8x and a 10x is more of a personal preference. I have both and use both.

On the other hand, an 8x will be noticeably easier to steady for most people and the typically wider field of view makes for an easier binocular to use, especially if you are a bit new to binoculars.

I agree with the poster above. The 8x is easier to hold steady for many people and that makes a big difference when looking at detail. Also an 8x will give a wider field of view so it would be easier to follow fast moving game and take in more area. Also the 8x would likely be a few bucks cheaper. I prefer 7x myself.

Hi Black Crow

I also prefer 7x. Too bad there aren't more 7x binoculars on the market. It's a shame.

I really appreciate everyone's input. What about the Nikon Monarch 3 vs Nikon 7294 Monarch ATB 8x42? I am planning a visit to the Amazon in 3 weeks. My budget is prob around $200 with some flexibility. Would appreciate any suggestions.

My biggest issue with the Monarchs, which I've owned, is the narrowish FOV. I like a large FOV. The Bushnell have a somewhat larger one and I'm also considering them myself along with the Zen Ray ZRS which I've heard a lot of good talk about but a narrow fov. The new Kowa SV sounds like a winner too and is in that price r range but again with that narrow fov. ( by narrow I mean compared to some, but itself 315' is considered decent, just not for me) I think the Bushnell is the Winner here. I'm off to look at a pair for the second time tomorrow. If I like it I'm buying them here.

For 8x42, go for Monarch. The Ultra optics are fine, and I use them, but the mechanics of the Monrach are more natural, no blackouts for any user.

For 10x, I currently use only the Ultras, sold my old generation of Monarchs.
