Minox, Made in Germany or Japan?

Postby Jimbo on Sat Apr 15, 2006 11:53 am

Hello. I was just wondering, I have a minox bino and, while the box, neckstrap, and website claim that my binocular is made in Germany, on the underside it says "Made in Japan for Minox". My intial thought is that the body is made in Japan, but the optics are German. Anyone know what is going on here?

Hi

That is a dilema facing a lot of us. A global economy brings global sourcing and these days, a product with all parts made in one location or even one country is getting to be more and more of a rare thing. To further complicate matters, labeling laws vary from one part of the world to the next.

My guess is that your Minox is using Japanese lenses and/or is being assmbled in Japan. With the shifting production patterns in the optics industry, made in Japan these days is generally a mark of good quality, though.

Ok. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I was hoping that the optics were German, but knowing that they are japanesse is still alright. I guess it's just physiological. In these days Japan and Europe are producing such high quality glass I really don't think it makes a difference where it is made. It's like apples and oranges and here are 2 good examples http://www.opticsplanet.com/nikon-10x42 ... lars.html# http://www.opticsplanet.com/zeiss-victo ... ulars.html It is really impossible to say which country makes better glass, but I'm sure that as long as there are optics enthusists out there, there will always be debate. I am suprised that I have never seen this topic come up here before.

Hi Jimbo

Yes, it gets pretty complicated. I used to use Contax cameras. They used Zeiss lenses, but the lenses were made by Zeiss in a factory in Japan. So were they German or were they Japanese? Are Nikon products made in Nikon factories in China really Chinese or are the Japanese? That's the optics biz these days.

Minox designs everything with "teutonic diligence" in Germany. Products are then built to their specifications in Japan.
