Binoculars for scoring targets at 300 yards

Postby opticsplanet.com on Thu Nov 18, 2004 3:37 pm

I would like to find a pair of binoculars that I could see .223 cal shot
groups at 300 yards without difficulty. I also want these to be used on
hikes, etc. A selection would be great. Thank you

To score bullet holes from a .223 at 300 yards is beyond the capability of a conventional handheld binocular of 7-10x.

For your application, you will need to a) go with a tripod supported high power binocular of at least 20x, such as the Pentax 20x60, http://www.opticsplanet.com/65806.html or b)a tripod supported sspotting scope, preferrably a 15-45 or 20-60x zoom such as the Bausch&Lomb Elite 2-6-x80, http://www.opticsplanet.com/bausch-lomb ... scope.html

The spotting scope option is by far the best choice in terms of performance and versatility.

A quality 15X power will work. I have done exactly what you are asking about with offerings from Minox and Docter. A spotting scope would be ideal, but it is not mandatory and it is not a versatile as the binos.
