I am wanting to buy a pair primarily for general use however I will be going on a cruise to alaska so I would like them to be WP. I would like an opinion on the DX 8x56, or Pentax DCF HRII 8x42. All things being equal, I think I would prefer the roof prisms however if the porros are superior to the roofs I would prefer the porros. Any adice would be appreciated.

I have no direct experience with the DX binos. The HRIIs are a descent bino for the money. For general sight seeing either should work fine. I would not want either for a hunting bino. Here are some general rules: a $200 porro is optically superior to a $200 roof; porros are rarely truly waterproof regardless of what they claim, roofs almost always are waterproof; roofs are generally much more rugged and durable than roofs; roofs are generally more compact than the same mag/obj porro. Bottom line, I generally prefer roofs over porros. For your application either would probably be fine.
