A good spotting scope on a tripod will be the most effective and most versatile. For home use, it need not be waterproof or especially rugeed. You may also wish to use it for some astronomy.
A scope that uses standard 1.25" astronomy eyepieces will give you a tremendous range of magnification potential, should you opt ot do some astronomy.
Our most popular scopes for your application are the Meade ETX-90, http://www.opticsplanet.com/meade-etx90ss.html or Celestron C-90 spotting scope, http://www.opticsplanet.com/celestron-c ... scope.html. mounted on a good camera tripod such as the Bogen 3175N kit, http://www.opticsplanet.com/bogen-manfr ... d-kit.html
