Binocular purchase advice

Postby marcpierre on Sun May 20, 2007 6:17 pm

Hello-

I realize this will probably be repetitive to those of you who have an expertise in the subject, but I would appreciate your advice. My daughter(11) and I have bought season tickets to our local professional soccer team season. I realize it would be helpful to magnify the action but need help in deciding what would work to keep up with a fast moving sport etc.. Someone told me they might not allow large binoculars in the stadium for fear of camera/video shooting?(does anyone know about this?)
Anyway today I believe I made a mistake in being convinced to buy a Bushnell Pacifica zoom(10-30 x 50) Insta-Focus 21-1035 binocular.
Did I make a mistake and what would be recommended for this application?
I truly appreciate you advice. Thank you- Marc

P>S> paid $69 + tax= $75.00 for the 21-1035 thanks

Hi

You will need to check with local officials as to what is or is not allowed in games for viewing purposes, but many places do restrict the use of cameras.

You should be looking for a 7x or 8x (first number) binocular with a 32 to 42 mm objective (last number) for your application. A zoom binocular is not only inferior in terms of optics and construction, it also suffers from a very narrow field of view. Laslty, a zoom will require a tripod for support to use effectively - not practical for your application.

For the same money, try the Bushnell Legacy, http://www.opticsplanet.com/bushnell-le ... 20842.html

Thank you very much. Would a 10x magnification be too high?

thanks

Hi

No, 10x would not be too high, but going from an 8x to a 10x will not offer a significant increase in detail, but it will reduce the field of view. For following action, an 8x is generally a better choice.

thank you- what about the Insta-Focus to follow the action? How long would your UPS shipment take to Los Angeles?

thanks again- Marc

Hi

I would stay away from Insta-focus. It does not have the track record for durability compared to a conventional center focus and following the action will not be a big problem with a center focus.

UPS ground to California is usually 3-5 business days.

Thank you- Is the Carson SW-842 better than or comparable to the Bushnell Legacy WP 8X42 for spectator sports in a stadium?

thanks again!

Hi

You are very welcome.

Both are comparable and will do a nice job for that application.

I just purchased a bushnell pacifica 10-30x50 zoom binoculars. I'm very pleased with the optical quality,
especially for the price. When zoomed to 20x, it rivals fixed 20 power i've tried. It does get a little
fuzzy at full zoom, but all and all i'm pleased with the purchase.

I also have the Bushnell Pacifica zoom binoculars. I find that the left and right optics seem to be misaligned.
Can this be repaired or will Bushnell replace them under warranty?
