Red dot for Raging Bull

Postby hogslayer on Tue Jan 13, 2009 8:29 pm

I'm trying to find the best red dot scope for use on a Taurus Raging Bull in 44 mag (6.5" barrel). I'm using this pistol for hog hunting. I like the holographic sights and the Eotech and Bushnell Holosight appear to be the best options, however these are more expensive than what I wanted to spend (~$200 or less). The Doctor and Burris red dots also look like good options, wlth the Burris being slightly cheaper. What would you recommend that will last on the 44 mag? Local gunshop has NCStar red dots that look good but the quality is questionable and I'm not sure it would hold up on the 44 mag.

Hi

Guarantee, based on many customer comments and returns, that it would be a mistake to put anything less than an EOTech or a Doctor on that gun. Spending $200 or less on a red dot is going to get you a disposable red dot. Sorry.

I've tried quite a few red dots on my revolvers and I recommend the JPoint or the Docter. I currently have a Jpoint on a S&W 686P and on a Taurus 66 both in 357. I haven't tried a Burris so I cannot comment.

In either case (Docter or JPoint) you may have some problem finding the mounting plate for a Taurus. You can put one on a weaver rail but the made for mounts keep the sight closer to the line of the bore and IMO improve accuracy.

Both are constant on sights that adjust to the ambient light so be sure your holster covers the sight completely -- a good idea in the field anyway -- or you'll have to carry it with the hood on.
