Red Dot Site for a Glock 17

Postby Dogbreath61 on Sat May 08, 2010 7:48 pm

Does anyone have an strong opinion on a red dot for a Glock 17. I've done a bit of reading and the Sightron S33 gets great reviews. Is this type of site the way to go for Glock 17 9mm?

I would highly recommend a mini red dot such as the Burris Fastfire II with a Burris Fastfire Glock mount. Why bother with a clumsy mount and optic when you can just replace the rear sight with a tiny, quality red dot and mount that will still let you put it in many holsters. It weighs about nothing, and has nearly the same feel as a pistol without a red dot on it at all. The dot is also much closer to the bore than any other kind of red dot sight.

After spending a couple hours shooting a Glock 17 and a Sig Sauer P226 (9MM), I decided on the Sig. Does your recommendation change if I've switched gun choices to a Sig? Will the Burris Fastfire mount well to a Sig 226? I'm obviously a novice here - done a fair amount of hunting as a youth but never owned a handgun. I'm looking for a site that will be fairly painless to mount (I'm guessing I'll need a gunsmith to mount it right) and care for that will help me get as close to what I'm aiming for as possible (my vision isn't what it use to be). Many thanks.

Yes, same recommendation. Just buy the mount for the Sig instead. A gunsmith installation is a good idea and worth the money and peace of mind.

Is there any kind of holster that that you can put a pistol in that has a scope mount on it. Such as this one? http://www.opticsplanet.com/mako-group- ... 48706.html

that setup takes over the rail as well as most of the area over the slide. I am not aware of a standard production holster that would work for that setup. A custom maker might be able to put together something for you.

I've thought about doing it to a competition gun, but I don't think I could carry it daily for protection. Dunno, guess I'd have to try it first.
