Is there a good FAQ for laser sights?

Postby Kevin H on Tue Jun 04, 2013 1:28 pm

Hi all,

Trying to pick a laser for a project - a carbine, so space isn't an issue. I have a couple little cheap lasers I've picked up at a gun show and ebay, but they're for pistols, and I'd like something more powerful - basically something that can be seen well in the daytime.

I've actually seen a FAQ on OP about lasers - but that's more about mounting and color. I know I want green for maximum visibility. But what I'm confused about is power. Is this one of those things like flashlights where numbers mean nothing?

I think I'm confused about the (US) laws as much as anything - like a laser pointer can't be over 5mw, but is a sight a pointer? There seem to be plenty that go into 100mw, 150 mw and beyond, but those are all cheap offshore deals, where the "nice" ones I'm seeing stay at 5mw and under.

So - I've got a lot of information, but it's just not comprehensive and at this point I'm just more confused than anything.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks,
Kevin

Legally, in the US, only lasers with 5mw maximum can be sold. Yes, there are many offshore products here with lasers over 5mw that will pop balloons and light cigarettes, but buyer beware. And there is no difference between pointers and weapon sights, the laws are the same. Buyer beware. Thanks for the question.
