I am considering replacing my Champians Choice 20x60 spotting scope with a 20-60x60 or 80 spotter. I'm not in a big hurry but I am looking for good quality for the dollar (aren't we all). My current candidates (thanks to this site) are the Bushnell Trophy or Legend, Alpen 788, or maybe the Vortex with angled eye piece. I will be using the spotter for high power matches, and spotting targets and shots from 25yds to 500yds (targets 25-200yds, shots to 500) at the range. An angled eye piece is desirable but not a must. Is the 80mm objective that much better than the 60mm? Which has the best optics for the task (clairity and light gathering)?Which one is the toughest for field use? BTW how does the Vanguard WT8 rate with either of the Bushnell spotters? |

Hi
No, I would not rate the Vanguard in this group. Of these, the Alpen 788 and Vortex Skyline are your best choice, with the Legend a close second. You will find the eye relief of the Trophy to be a bit too short for bench work.
All else equal, going to a larger objective will give you better preformance at higher magnifications, but, remember, all else is seldom equal in spotting scopes. Quality comes, first, and that is directly reflected in the price. Any of these, though, will do the job at 200 yards for scoring, assuming reasonable atmospheric conditions. _________________ Thanks for posting with us

Thanks
I was leaning toward the Legend with the 80mm objective, with the Alpen as my second choice. I think I will reverse that now. |
