I have been hunting with a contender pistol and always struggle with what gun barrel to bring in the woods. I have found the scoped barrel great unless a deer comes out close and then I have trouble finding them in the scope. When I do find them it is diffcult trying to determine where the crosshairs are on the deer. I have used a red dot scope before but found that it was hard to find the deer in heavy cover with the bright red dot in the tube getting my attention using one eye looking through the sight. The iron sights are great up close but when the deer steps out past about 60 yards I have trouble getting acceptable groups. The halo sights look like the best of both worlds between iron sights and the scope what do you think?

Red dots are a good choice, particularly good ones with minute intensity adjustments, and strong enough for your caliber. Teach yourself to shoot with both eyes open with all sighting systems. Look at the Bushnell HOLOsights as an extremely strong starting point for deer calibers, and the one inch dot allows for precise shot placement.
