Hi,

I'm looking to get a scope for my 8-yr old junior ornithologist son. When he goes birding, one of his parents usually go with him but I would like him to be able to carry it and the tripod on his own once in awhile so weight and portability is a factor. I also have read that an angled scope will be better as both he and parents will be using it for birding.

Price, of course, is the other factor. How much should I expect to spend on a pretty good quality scope that he and his parents will enjoy? Can you recommend some scopes and a tripod?

Thanks,
Ronny.

Hi Ronny

Need to pin down the price, as there is a huge range in price on spotting scopes.

For a beginner, a 60 or 65mm scope on an all metal tripod is a good place to start. I would begin with the Celestron Ultima 65 on a basic tripod, such as the Bushnell Advanced and go up from there. Anything less in the way of a scope or tripod and you take a real hit on quality and performance.

Hi Joanie,

That sounds like a good start. Scope and tripod then is about $200. Do I get significantly better quality at the $300 range. I'm assuming the tripod is fine, so a scope at the low $200 range.

Thanks,
Ronny.

Hi

Absolutely. When it comes to spotting scopes, the more you spend, the better the scope. Very direct relationship between quality and price, here. If you are looking for a small scope at a good price, try the Bushnell Legend 20-60x60 or the excellent Vortex Sandpiper
