Hi!
Could anyone be so kind and give me some opinions about these 3 compacts. Nikon 8 x 25 Pro-staff WP, Alpen 8 x 26 Shasta Ridge and Pentax 8x25mm UCF-WP. They seem to be almost identical whith a slight edge to Alpen for exit pupil and Nikon/Pentax for FOV and again maybe the Pentax for its claimed JIS class 6. Which JIS class does the Pro-staff and the Shasta ridge have? How do they compare to each other optical and mechanical. Is there a best buy in this group or can I just pick the cheapest one?

Hi

You are slpitting hairs on exit pupil. A fraction of an exit pupil is NEVER significant.

I have tested all three and it is pretty much a matter of brand preference and handling. I prefer the handling on the Nikon, but you may prefer one of the others. I also prefer the warranty on the Nikon.

Thanks for the quick answer joanie! Just one question. Do you know what JIS number the Alpen and the Nikon have? Are they as waterproof as the Pentax?

Hi

Sorry, not a provided spec, but I wouldn't lose any sleep over it unless you plan to drop the binoculars overboard and dive in to get them. Not going to be a factor in normal use in the rain and so on. All are good choices in a waterproof reverse porro.
