Dear Joanie,

I own a Celestron Out Land LX 10x42 Roof Prisms Waterproof Binocular. Recently I found that either the right or left can be focused.
Have tried diopter adjustment over the entire range (- to 0 to +). Is the problem with my eyes or binoculars?

Thanks and Regards.

Hi

Only the right eyepiece should be adjustable for diopter, not both. If the left eyepuiece is turning, it is defective and that would account for your difficulty. Turn it until it tightens down, if possible, then leave it alone. If it fails to tighten, time to give Celestron a call for repair.

On a conventional center focus roof prism, you make the initial diopter adjustment for your eyes by turning the center focus wheel to sharpen the left eyepiece, then turning the right eyepiece to sharpen the right eyepiece. After that, all focusing is done with the center focus wheel.

Hi Joanie,

I did exactly as you described by sharpening the left first using the centre focus wheel followed by the diopter on the right. The problem is throughout the entire range from - to 0 to + I still can't sharpen the focus on the right eye piece. I am using a fixed object from a fixed distance / location without moving the binoculars.

Hi

Sorry about the problems you are having. At this point, its either the bino is defective or simply does not have enough diopter adjustment for your eyes. The later is rare, but it can happen, if you have eyes that are very different in strength. I would try a similar binocular for comparison, but my guess is you have a bad bino.
