I am new to the world of decent quality optical equipment and am looking for advice on spotting scopes. As an observer of wildlife and hunter I am looking for a good quality, reasonably portable, waterproof spotting scope. Have checked out and been somewhat disappointed with Leopold Sequia and Nikon ProStaff models. Appears it may be necessary to step up a notch to +/- $1,000 range equipment. Any advice would be greatly appreciated?

Hi

You will need a good ED scope. At $1000, go with a Pentax PF80 in a full size scope or, for better portability, a good 65mm scope, such as the Kowa 663 plus the Z9B eyepiece. The Kowa is going to be a first class scope. Not going to do better until you spend much more and, even then, the improvement will only be slight.
