Where and when would the 50mm be an advantage over the 42mm?
And would the average person notice the difference?

A larger exit pupil is always easier to look through. In terms of light it matters what power level you are at. Read this section on exit pupil. Your pupil may open from 4mm to 7mm depending on age and other factors.
