Aloha Joanie,

I'm a newbie to this site as well as to the field of spotting scopes. I live in a home on the Big Island of Hawaii that is at the 400 ft. elevation, about a 1/2 mile from the ocean. We have whales and dolphin that come fairly close to the shore which I would like to be able to view more closely than my binoculars will allow. I've looked at some Nikon Fieldscopes and Vixen spotting scopes. I prefer the zoom to a fixed lens. With the fixed lens it seems that it is easy to miss things that you might otherwise see with a wider field of view that you can later zoom in on. Can you give me some good recommendations in the $500-$800 range? Thanks for your help!

Hi

In that prcie range, I would opt for the Bushnell Elite 20-60x80. Really won't do better till you get to the $1000 price point. The Vortex Skyline ED is also excellent, but no optional eyepieces ar camera accessories, as with the Elite.
