I'll be visiting Yellowstone in August, and I'm going to purchase a spotting scope for viewing wildlife in the evenings. Given my budget and reading these forums, I've narrowed the choices down to the Bushnell Legend 20-60x60, Celestron Ultima 80, and a used but in good condition Sightron 20-50x80. I was able to look through the Sightron and was impressed, but I'm not very experienced with quality spotting scopes.

Any input or other recommendations (up to $250) would be appreciated.

Hi

I'd give the 80mm Legend a slight edge, optically, to the Celestron Ultima 80 and I think it would be well worth spending a touch more to get the 80mm version of the Legend. Haven't checked out a Sightron, but price is always a good guide top spotting scope quality.

I received a Vortex Skyline 20-60 x80mm for Xmas and I am very, very happy with it. I have used it to view wildlife in my backyard as well as on several walks/hikes. I feel that it is an fantastic scope for the price. My wife and I researched several brands and tried out man scopes at various retailers and I believe that the Vortex was the best scope for the money. Very sharp at 20-40 power and still clear at 60...

Also, the warranty is fantastic.

Hi

I agree - the Skyline is one of my picks at that price point and well worth spending the money to get.

Thanks for your help, Joanie. Not only here, but reading all of the applicable threads along with the articles was a crash course in learning about and purchasing a spotting scope. I really appreciate the time and effort you've put into this. I went ahead and ordered the 80mm Legend, and because of your efforts I feel like I made a well informed decision.

I don't remember the sales reps name, but please put in a good word for her if you can. She was extremely polite, helpful and efficient. You don't get that very often over the phone these days.
