Hunter S. Thompson

Postby Quest on Fri Sep 05, 2008 1:38 pm

I was wondering if anyone could identify what pair of aviators, Hunter S. Thompson is wearing in this picture from the 60's

Image

I thought at first it was a pair of Ray Ban Outdoorman but not sure about the shape of the glass

Thank you![/url]

Hello,

The model on the picture looks a lot like D&G DD6020 sunglasses. However, it might be the Ray Ban outdoorsman I or II sunglasses.

These are some vintage sunglasses. I have never seen them before.

first one : they are Ray ban shooting glasses from WW period, i mean those were vintage at the photo moment too!
i'm sure they are also pre BL etching on the lens, they could be a 1/30 10K GF frame

second one : not ray ban

Wow, Those are pretty cool. I have searched all over the internet trying to find that vintage model but found no leads. Does anyone have any clues for that unique shape of lens?

I've dubbed them "reverse aviators." Look at them.

I was advised that one might be able to commission a jeweler to custom make those glasses. The jeweler might just be able to break apart and re-attach a pair of aviators.

Those are the most prominent glasses I've ever seen in my life.

The TOFINO by Zeal Optics resembles the one mat posted (http://www.zealoptics.com/tofino.html).

:)

I realized that although the ones at the imgur link look as though they're aviators with the lenses switched around, they have a unique shape which is a little more compact than most aviators. So having a pair of aviators modified wouldn't work in a genuine way.

If anyone has any clue where to find a similar style or that exact model number we would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Vintage Ray Bans with the same design, but they're clip ons. Apparently this is a type of "cat eye" frame.

Found these the other day.

Also found these, they're similar to his "reversed aviator" or "cat eye" glasses, they'd be perfect if they didn't have those cat paw decor!

Thanks - I'm thinking about taking the Cat eyes to a jeweler to see if it would be possible to remove the paw decor. I'll post an update when I figure something out.

Thought I'd share this too, I found this about a month ago, pretty cool :)
