Ray Ban: Are crystal green lenses the same as g-15 lenses?
Re: Ray Ban: Are crystal green lenses the same as g-15 lenses?
Polycarbonate is the most impact resistant lens available. Polycarbonate lenses are highly recommended for kids, sportsmen and military. In most cases this lens material is thinner & lighter than CR-39 or glass. It blocks UV rays and Anti-scratch coating is included.
Glass lenses feature superior optical quality and scratch resistance. However this lens material can crack or break.
You will know you are getting glass when the lens is described as "crystal". If you are not sure you can always ask me or any knowledgeable retailer or salesperson.
Great Questions!

Re: Ray Ban: Are crystal green lenses the same as g-15 lenses?
Thnx for the quick answer Larum. I also added another post, before the last one, copied beneath. I think with that I might have all I need for now :-) Thank you in advance..
"green/Gray can be the same as G-15 or smoke/green. Sometimes the different name can represent a different material. Color code 58 is represented in the 2012 Ray-Ban catalog as being natural green. This is also another term for G-15 but in polycarbonate. Same great color!"
Thank you very much larumd. So actually the (standard) colors are just grey and green for the glasses on the RB 2140 901? With an extra option for polarized glases? And there are no different shades of green whatsoever? (Just checking if I understood this correctly)
Then one other question about the frame size if I may; I have a fairly big head but when I tried on the 50 it seemed to fit ok. The 54 was unavailable in that specific store. What surprised me was that, with my big head, I still neaded the smaller size. For whome is the bigger size made and do I even need to bother finding it to try it on?
Thank you.

Re: Ray Ban: Are crystal green lenses the same as g-15 lenses?
The RB2140 actually comes with several colors and materials:
Gray Gradient (polycarbonate)
Green G-15 (polycarbonate)
Crystal Green (glass)
Crystal Green Polarized (glass)
Crystal Gradient Blue
Gradient Brown to Blue
Crystal Brown Polarized
Crystal Brown Gradient
Crystal Gray Gradient Pink
Take a look at your options here at the Ray-Ban Original Wayfarer Sunglasses RB2140.
Fit and size is always very confusing. If the smaller size works for you that's great. No need to look any further. 54mm would be for a wider face ideally. I always tell my readers that I can quote numbers and sizes but the best way to determine fit is to try them on.

Re: Ray Ban: Are crystal green lenses the same as g-15 lenses?
Hi, I have a question that is kind of related to this topic...
Are the Crystal Green lenses the darkest kind of lenses that are available in the Wayfarer Original?
I'm looking for Johnny Knoxville style Ray Bans for my (very fussy!) boyfriend, but the lenses on his seem to be very dark?

Hello Becky,
For the darkest lens available in the Ray-Ban Original Wayfarer Sunglasses RB2140 I would choose the Polarized Crystal Green lens in the black frame. This is the most popular and recognizable combination and the darkest lens. Now it's up to you to decide if he needs the 54mm or the 50mm. The 54mm is the largest size offered.
Good Luck.

Ray-Ban is actually produced in both Italy and China by the manufacturer named Luxottica. Products from both factories are deemed 100% authentic. Cases are also made in these locations.
Your product should have included a case, warranty booklet and cleaning cloth.

Re: Ray Ban: Are crystal green lenses the same as g-15 lenses?
Larum,
What is the difference between RB2140 - 901 and RB2140 - 901S?
And secondly, if I want to get the darkest looking* lens on the Wayfarer, should I opt for a G-15XLT or a Grey lens?
And thirdly, if I want to get a mirror shine lens on the Wayfarer, should I opt for a G-15XLT or a Grey lens?
Thanks much!
* by darkest looking, I mean, the blackest lens option available when others see the lens on my face. I understand that if on the other hand, I want to have the darkest view, I should get the polarized option.

Darkest looking and darkest view are one in the same. Yes, get polarized green or gray. Your eyes will be hard to see.
Does this help you?

Hi,
I'm just about to buy some New Ray Ban Wayfarer RB2132 with black frames.
However I want the Darkest lenses they have. (closest looking to black)
So I either buy -
Crystal Green or Grey Green lenses.
Does anybody know which is darker/blacker looking?
Here they are below;
Crystal Green

Hi Larum,
Recently got the Wayfarer RB2140 902/57 50 22 3N Totoise frame/brown lenses, and have been disappointed with the sun protection offered by these lenses :( I am prone to headaches brought on by glare, and was anticipating protection similar to my 2 older rayban models also brown lenses non polarized. Slightly confused and wondering if the green lenses are in fact darker as they appear to be. Considering the switch. Can you make a recommendation on both polarized and non polarized for darkest lenses/best protection (something like that?)
Thank you!!

Hello,
Crystal Green or Grey Green lenses are the same color. Crystal means that the material is glass. Gray Green is another way of describing G15. When the word crystal in not present the lenses might be polycarbonate if the seller followed Ray-Ban's rules. The only color slightly darker than G15 is gray. Furthermore, when the lenses are built with the polarization filter they will be naturally darker than a non-polarized lens.
I hope this helps.

I tend to be a polarization snob. You will find that the polarized lenses will always be darker than non-polarized lenses. If glare gives you issues be sure to only purchase polarized lenses.

Re: Ray Ban: Are crystal green lenses the same as g-15 lenses?
I have to say - there is a fundamental mistake being communicated in this thread: "Crystal Green" and "G15" ARE NOT the same lens.
What Ray Ban is currently referring to as "Crystal Green" is their old G3 lens - the natural green that used to be in their original aviator glasses back in the 30s/40s before the advent of the G15, which has a gray tone added, thus gray/green.
Compare the two side by side - look at Ray Ban's website on models where they show "Crystal Green" (which they even refer to as a "vintage color") - it's a much purer, lighter green, with no gray.
To say they are the same thing going by different names is wrong, and I'd hate for people to buy expensive "Crystal Green" glasses thinking they're getting G15 lenses, when in fact, they are not.

Thanks for posting. You would have to call Ray-Ban and speak with them as they explained the colors just as I have shared. Maybe they would be able to help you with your comparison. They are owned and manufactured by Luxottica at 800-343-5594.
