Ray Ban: Are crystal green lenses the same as g-15 lenses?

Postby heyitsamy2322 on Tue Apr 12, 2011 7:55 pm

I just ordered a pair of Ray Ban Caravans in gunmetal/crystal green. I didn't notice until a couple hours after I place my order that there was also gunmetal/g-15. I couldn't tell a difference between the two colors, so I was wondering if they were the same thing? Thanks

Hello,

Thanks for posting this great question. Crystal Green is Ray-Ban's alternative name for green glass. This Green color is also known as G15. G15 is produced in polycarbonate and glass. If you ordered Crystal Green you will receive G15 in glass!

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

That being said, are all Ray Ban sunglasses listed as having crystal green lenses the same as those listed as having the g-15 xlt lenses? And if this is true, if I were to order the Ray Ban wayfarers with crystal green lenses from this website, will they in fact have g-15 lenses? Thanks.

Jessica,

Anytime Ray-Ban uses the term Crystal Green as a lens option, they are referencing the G-15 XLT lenses. If your Wayfarers state Crystal Green you will get the XLT!

Thanks for the post!

Also, are all Ray-Ban wayfarers made with glass lenses? Or are some plastic? I'm asking because I'm also looking at a pair with black lenses and I was curious. Thanks!

Jessica,

Yes, all Ray-Ban Wayfarers are made with crystal (glass) lenses. You are welcome to give me the model number of the model you have interest in. I will be happy to verify the lens material for you. Please note that they offer gray lenses not black. Just wanted to clarify.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

Thanks Larum! And thanks for clarifying the lense color as well. There's this seller on Amazon who listed a pair as having black lenses but you're correct that they're actually gray. The model I'm looking at are the RB2140 with black frames and gray lenses.

I searched for a black frame with gray lenses. The Ray-Ban Original Wayfarer Sunglasses RB2140 doesn't offer that exact combination. They do have the 100032 with gray lenses but the frame is black on the outside with a white edging and a yellow interior. I checked all other wayfarers and Ray-Ban seems to put the G15 lens in all black frames. This is because that is their original famous look of the Wayfarer.

If you are interested in having my local lab make gray lenses in a black frame call me at 1-800-504-5897 ext 320. They can produce the lenses with or without vision correction.

I came across ya'lls discussion and had a few questions. I am currently trying to buy some Ray Bans and I am a little confused about the lenses as well as I don't know anything about them. On the Ray Ban official site as well as Optics Planet, the lens on the glasses are only sold in "Grey". I have found on majority of other sites "Sunglass Hut" sell them in the "crystal green" option. Are these real? Also, what is the difference between the grey and crystal green, opinions? Here are some sites if you get a chance.

Thank you for the post. The RB4075 is currently offered with Crystal (glass) lenses in the following combinations:

Genuine Ray-Ban Sunglasses RB4075 Styles:

* 714/51-6116 Ray-Ban RB4075 Sunglasses: 61 mm Lens Diameter, Dark Brown Frame, Crystal Brown Gradient Lenses
* 601-6116 Ray-Ban RB4075 Sunglasses: 61 mm Lens Diameter, Black Frame, Crystal Green Lenses

* 642/57-6116 Ray-Ban RB4075 Sunglasses: 61 mm Lens Diameter, Havana Frame, Crystal Brown Polarized Lenses

Gray is no longer available. The other retailers may not be selling fakes, just discontinued options remaining in stock. I hope this clarifies some of the confusion. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I, like most of the previous people, am interested in buying a pair of ray bans. I am looking into the Wayfarer model and have seen the lenses. In person there are the lenses that have that mirror effect when looking at them but I'm not sure that these are the crystal green lenses or some other shade or color? It may be that just on the computer they look different then in person but from what it looks like there is certainly a difference between that of the green color in that of a darker shade, that also has that mirror affect. If so I want to make sure that I purchase the correct kind.

Hello,

Ray-Ban will add the flash mirror coating to a lot of their crystal (glass) lenses. Photos represented on the computer can be difficult to determine. I am glad you asked. The G-15 will have the green gray effect and the gray lenses will be straight gray smoke. Which color lenses are you interested in? Which wayfarer do you like best? I will try to get you into the exact combination you have interest in.

You are welcome to call me at 1-800-504-5897 ext 320. We can take as much time as you need.

G-15 lenses are actually neutral gray so that color is not distorted. Green is green. I worked for B&L as the [link=http://www.opticsplanet.com/ray-ban-brand.html]RayBan[/link] rep in Northern California in 1981-82.

Ray-Ban lenses are now produced by Luxottica the current owners of Ray-Ban. Their 2011 catalog describes G15 as: "Easily identified by its trademark green (also called "neutral vision" lens), the G15 has come standard in every model since Ray-Ban was founded in 1937. Comfortable and relaxing, these lenses reduce eyestrain dramatically."

Hi guys, picking up on this subject after a while. I came across an extra color on the net; grey green. So that leaves u with 'grey' 'crystal green' and 'grey green'. What's the difference between the last two? From what I read above I'd say they might be the same (G15) but also I keep seing color code 58. It's great that there are so many options, but it's kinda confusing if so many different descriptions are being used. Can anyone clarify? Thnx!

Hello, Thank you for the post.

Green/Gray can be the same as G-15 or smoke/green. Sometimes the different name can represent a different material. Color code 58 is represented in the 2012 Ray-Ban catalog as being natural green. This is also another term for G-15 but in polycarbonate. Same great color!

Yes, it can be confusing so I am glad you came to this forum. We will help you.

Hello,

I am also interested in buying raybans. I'm going to buy the new wayfarers 5218.
I was on amazon and found some polarized with gray lenses but they also have them polarized with crystal green lenses. The ones I tried on in sunglass hut weren't polarized but i took a picture of the tag so that i can remember the model name and it said "grn". so now I'm confused about the grey and the green. I read above the grey doesn't exist anymore? Is grey just darker so it looks like black and green has that natural visibility you are talking about? I think what I'm asking is which should I get and whats the difference?

Thanks in advance

Hello,

I was able to find 2 Polarized Green G-15 options for the Ray-Ban New Wayfarer Sunglasses RB2132. Both have black frame in either the 52mm and 55mm eye size.

The Blue Rubber frame also comes in 52mm and 55mm but has a Crystal Gray Gradient lens that is not polarized.

I believe the 5218 is no longer in production.

Thank you very much larumd. So actually the (standard) colors are just grey and green for the glasses on the RB 2140 901? With an extra option for polarized glases? And there are no different shades of green whatsoever? (Just checking if I understood this correctly)

Then one other question about the frame size if I may; I have a fairly big head but when I tried on the 50 it seemed to fit ok. The 54 was unavailable in that specific store. What surprised me was that, with my big head, I still neaded the smaller size. For whome is the bigger size made and do I even need to bother finding it to try it on?

Thank you.

One more question I'd like to add; Larum, earlier in this forum (feb, 2010) you said that 'G15 is produced in polycarbonate and glass'. What is the difference between the 2 and how do I know what I'm getting?

Tanks again.
