Bushnell Speed Gun - reading 58 MPH instead of 0 MPH

Postby skrabba on Thu Jun 11, 2009 6:53 pm

Just got my Speed Gun Speedster II (model 10-1900) and loaded some old C batteries in from a flashlight. The speed gun would register 58 MPH when I aimed it at a stationary object. At a moving object I would see it sometimes register the correct speed but by the time I was ready to let go of the trigger it would go back to 56, 57, or 58 MPH.

I thought the unit was broken until I put in some new rechargeables and all my problems went away. So the speed gun is not very good at alerting the user that the batteries have insufficiently power.

By the way, with the fresh batteries if I aim it at something stationary and press the trigger I wind up with a blank display vs the constant 58 MPH I was seeing before. Only when something is moving do I see a value registering. Hurrah!

Thought I'd share this with others who have similar problems. Lesson learnt - Use fresh batteries, and don't go for the cheap ones. (I ended up using 2x Eneloop AA's inside a C battery housing - works extremely well).

Hi,

Yes, this is a known issue with some of the Bushnell units. There is a chip inside that draws more current than a standard alkaline battery can supply at one time. Using rechargeable batteries like the Energizer e2 2500 mAh rechargeable batteries will correct the problem. This has worked in 100% of reported cases. These batteries allow more current to be drawn at a time and they will power the unit will complete reliability and accuracy.
Best regards,

Ryan W.
