glass lenses

Postby stevenportsmouth on Tue May 14, 2013 1:19 pm

My wife has gotten many minor scratches on the plastic lenses of several handheld magnifiers, so we want a replacement with a real glass lens. Many listings don't tell whether they are acrylic or glass, and glass seems extremely rare. Is there a recommended 2-3X handheld with about a 3 1/2" to 5" lens available for her at a reasonable price? We do have a "Big Eye" lamp/lens combination in acrylic from her optician. It has lasted several years, but is getting worse from being cleaned. A handheld with a similar size and strength lens would be terrific. Thanks, Steve

Plastic lenses are now the norm. They are lighter, transmit light just as well, and are almost as scratch resistant. Plus, it costs about a zillion times less to make them. If companies like Zeiss converted to plastic, it seems as if they have it figured out quite well. They are not necessarily concerned with saving money, they are interested in making the best product available. Sorry, no glass lenses here except a couple that may have slipped through my views.
