Hi
A GPS is like a camera or a computer. It's loaded with menus and options. You need to read the manual and practice.
You store information on a GPS via "waypoints". Your starting position is always stored as a waypoint, then various points on the trail that are significant, such as forks and other trouble spots. This is standard operating procedure on a GPS, though many models now have a function that maps the route as you go. If you only store the starting position, the GPS will always show you the direction to the starting position, but it may not show you the route to get there.
