Beginner Portable Scope

Postby Baron68 on Sat Nov 01, 2008 1:37 pm

I am interested in getting a first telescope. I know next to nothing about them. I'd like to be able to take it to the beach a couple of times a year. I'd like to keep the price around $200 until I can learn more about what I'm doing. I've even considered a spotting scope. I'm interested in your thoughts and recommendations.

Thanks,
Charlie

Hi

You can always use any spotting scope for some astronomy, but if you are serious about astronomy, you should get an astronomy telescope. It's as much a matter of the mount as it is the scope. A photo tripod used with spotting scopes is limited in terms of the magnification it can handle. If you want to go with a spotting scope, a model which uses standard telescope eyepieces is a good choice. try the Celestron C90.

For a telescope, try a Meade DS2114, but sand is the enmesis of any optical instrumnet. Be careful.

A great way to learn more on the basics of choosing a telescope is to first read my article, Telescope First Questions. This gets you started with the two most important decisions to make, right away. Then narrow your choice down even more with my article How to choose the right telescope This discusses the pros and cons of each telescope design.
