New scope question

Postby PJK on Tue Nov 25, 2008 2:52 pm

I know there is no easy answer, but I'll ask the question anyway. What scope should I buy?

I have narrowed my choices down to the Meade 8" LX90-ACF or the Celestron 8" CPC 800 computerized with XLT coatings. I have a few questions regarding each:

1. Is there a significant difference between the ACF and starbright XLT coatings?
2. Is one computer supierior, or easier to use, than the other?
3. Regarding the mounts, is one better than another. I seem to recall hearing, or reading, that the Celestron is better because it has more teeth in the gears and has metal gears while the meade has plastic. Is this true?
3. Can either of these be used without using the computer and alignment process? Sometimes I like to go out an just scan the skys.
4. Is there anything else I need to be aware of?

Thanks for your help

Hi

Really a Ford and Chevy question and as much your preference for one brand over another. Feature for feature nearly identical.

The ACF is not the coatings, it is the optical correction. The UHTC is the optical coating on the Meade and it is very comparable to XLT. On the other hand, the ACF will be a touch sharper at the edge of the field.

You can use any fork mount without a computer, as long as you be sure to loosen the friction so that you are not placing undue strain on the gears or motors. Pushing the scope with everything locked down can cause damage.

Have had no compalints or issues on returns from either scope as to the mount.

Personally, I would be happy with either.

Thanks for the info. I think I may be leaning towards the Meade, only because I have one now and am familiar with the computer.

Thanks again
