Help me pick out a telescope

Postby nammyboi on Fri Dec 26, 2008 11:44 pm

I'm planning on buying a telescope and my range is about 100-150 and maybe 200. I've been looking around and so far im interested in the celetron 114eq, celestron 130eq, or the zhumell 114eq with the motor drive. I need help deciding if i should get one of these as my first telescope? or is there any other good beginners telescope that im not aware of?

Hi

All else equal, go with the larger scope - the 130. A motor drive is a nice feature if you want to do some astrophotography, but you can always ad a motor drive to the Celestron. The main factor in telescope performance is the diameter of the mirror or lens - not the magnification or power. A larger scope is a better choice if you want a scope that has potential to maintain an interest in astronomy. Any telescope, even a small telescope like this one, can see exactly the same TYPES of objects - moon, planets, galaxies, nebulae, star clusters - as a large telescope, it just can't see as many of them or as much detail in them as a larger telescope. If you are concerned with performance, buy the largest telescope you can afford (not the one that advertises the most power) that has all the features you want.

thanks, i was wondering if yall had any of the celestron 130's in stock and was also wondering how long would it take to arrive to louisiana? I have to head back to school in 2 weeks and would like to know if it would arrive in time. And also if i had the choice to choose between the zhumell 114eq or the celestron 114eq which should i go for?

Hi

Give us a call on availability - it can change by the hour. Despite the motor drive on the Zhumell, I prefer the overal quality on the Celestron.
