Just Bought 1st Telescope

Postby yoopermom on Sun Sep 20, 2009 10:50 am

We just bought a Tasco Galaxsee 46-060675 used yesterday. I found a manual online on how to adjust things. My questions concern the lens. It came with one that is 25mm, 10mm, and 4mm, also 2 long pieces that can be attached between the telescope and lens. Could someone please explain how to use these properly. I homeschool my daughter and we are spending the year on planets, stars, all things space and would love to be able to figure the telescope out as an extra teaching aide.
Thanks,
Dawn

Those tubes are called barlow lenses and they go between the eyepiece and the telescope. Just insert the barlow inot the scope, first, then insert the eyepiece into the barlow. However, DO NOT use a barlow with the highest magnification eyepieces - 4mm and maybe the 10mm or you risk getting too much magnification.

Here are some of my basic observing articles which can be used with any telescope, however.

I strongly recommend a local astronomy club. An astronomy club is the quickest way to learn both astronomy and telescopes and astronomers are almost universally willing to help a beginner. A basic book on telescopes and astronomy is also a good option. Try "Nightwatch" by Terence Dickinson, available at any large bookstore. Two excellent magazines, available in stores or the internet are Astronomy Magazine and Sky&Telescope.
